Depends how far you want to go.

If your going the new top end route,
11:1 piston, stage 2 hotcam, ported and polished head..

There are easy bolt on stuff you could do instead of a new top end.

hotcam around $130

Piston around $130

Top end gasket Kit $50? (maybe less)

If its a 2012 your valves are probably fine and wont have to mess with them.

2002 CRF450 timing chain $40- the stock 400ex chains are known for stretching bad and this is just a heavy duty timing chain commonly used.

I would just do a minor P&P job yourself, its pretty easy.

Your gonna wanna get the GT Thunder HD headstuds just for insurance, but its your call on that. They run about $60 and its like $55 to have GT thunder install them, or you can have anyone with a roll-form tap do it.

You are probably looking at around $500 to do that.

Thats just my opinion, its a very common setup around these forums. And really wakes up the motor of a 400ex. Im doing that for a buddy right now.

It all depends on what you want to do and how and where you ride. Do some research first. Do a search on this site or go back and read some old post on this subject.
You can go mild to wild, you need to be more specific on where and how you ride.

I picked up my stage 2 hot cam for only 70 bucks on ebay so i got a good deal. But i took it and i got it port and polished, a 12.5:1 piston, the stage 2 hot cam, 450r carb, ect. All the stuff done to mine is in my sig.

But it does have a good bit more of throttle responce and torque. I wish i had alitte more top end though, but i like it how it is.

Good luck with everything.

When you order the piston make sure you get a 10.5:1 or 11:1. If you replace it with a stock 9:1 you'll be doing all of it for nothing.

Dammit, I ordered all of the stuff I need from C&D and he told me the price went up and that they're 175 now. figures, oh well. Also still waiting on the actual purchase to go through. As of right now nothing has been deducted from my account and I kinda wanted to have these things ready for an upcoming trip here in a few weeks. We'll see

Try changing your sprocket sizes for more top end. The 05 and up are geared lower, I changed mine to the 99-04 Sprocket sizes and it made a big differance. I think its a 15 up front and a 38 on the rear. Make sure you order the front sprocket for the 05 and up models because I heard that they are splined differant, but I don't know for sure.

Alright i'll look into that but wouldn't that decrease your low-mid end a little bit?

You should be fine with your mods. The sprocket change made my bike feel all around better. It did not rev out as fast and felt like I could pull more power out of the lower gears and the top end feels like I don't need that sixth gear anymore that I always wished I had!
