View Full Version : $1100 Budget. 426 Bore?

I know the "Which bore should I get" topic has been beaten to death. I've done my fair share of searching and have come to find that the 426 kit is probably best for me. But I still have questions related to MY specific situation.

So, with that being said, I have a $1100 budget and professional help. I also obviously want to get the MOST power/performance for what I do. (Also will have to compensate my helper a bit)

The trails around here have tons of sandy straight-a-ways, but there are also a fair share of turns... So its pretty neutral. I also like to bomb around the yard.. Wheelie around.. etc etc.. I want to stick to running 93 octane, as I always have and don't have access to anything else. I also ride as much as possible so reliability is key (hence the 426>440)..

I have a 2005 400ex. Only performance modifications are a slip on exhaust. Also have tires all around..

Here is what I've come up with so far:

426 kit ($140, eBay)
Stage 2 Hotcam ($130, eBay)
Port & Polish (Whatever he charges me)
Re-Jetting, suggestions? (Whatever he charges me)
I like the stock gearing, so I figured I would leave that untouched..
New carb would be nice, but them 39mm carbs are a bit pricey...

So what am I missing for the most "oomf"? Also, just because I have the $1100 budget, doesn't mean I want to spend it all lol..

Thanks,

Shane

450r carb, instead of an aftermarket one. I would also invest in yfz450 OR trx450r front shocks they are a great investment no matter what kind of riding you do.

Is it simple to do the 450r carb? Cost?

Good call on the shocks.. I hate my pogo-sticks....

Would these work?

Might want to go with a 416 over a 426, slightly more cylinder wall left and still gives you the 426 bore later. If you don't mind used you should be able to pick up a 04-05 450r carb for around $100. Another thing to help a little is a xr400 head gasket and no base gasket, adds another .5 or so of compression.

Do you have stock front suspension? If so I'd definitely budget some money for it, you should be able to find a decent set of 450r shocks for $150-200. Definitely worth it, probably best bang for the buck thing I've done for my bike.

an adjustable cam gear and degree the camshaft with the xr400 gasket. i would think alot of the 450r carb, along with the header pipe flowing better. yfz calipers front arent a bad choice if you had the extra coin.

my 416 i have rips. i am going to bore it to a 426 now since its smoking like cheech and chong. thats a great benefit of the 416, then throw a stroker crank in there one day and have a sweet stroker.

i just went back to a 416 from a 426.even up here in the north that thing ran so hot i had to run a spal fan on the stock cooler and put the FST auxiliary cooler kit on as well.the heat fade was awful.way better off to go with 416 and leave that 426 as a backup.i would run either fan or extra cooler kit even with 416.if you ride even remotely hard it will benefit you tremendously.

with your stated budget you should have no problem getting 11:1 piston and gaskets, port work, used fan or the FST kit, cam, used 450 carb from ebay, labor and still have a little money to play with after.

just noticed you have only a slip on...hmmm.any motor stock or otherwise benefits the most from a full exhaust and better air filter run with lid off.when jetting, those things require the most significant jetting alterations and are a must when doing any form of motor work.yes even more than a bigger bore size (some may argue just going by what i've seen).i would hold off on the carb until after a full exhaust just make sure its jetted properly so its getting enough fuel and not runing lean.

X2 on the 450 shocks I got mine off eBay for around 200 and only had 5 hours on them it firms the suspension up nicely plus you geta rezzy with those shocks :)

i put some KFX450r shocks on mine and i think they are the smoothest of all the 450 shocks the honda450 shocks bolt right up and so do the yamaha i think. The kawi shocks do require some machine work on the top eye mount but only took me an hour and are 150% better then stock!! they are extremely smooth and deff look beefy up front! people often ask about my front end setup!!

Got a pic of that front end setup Donjuan400ex?

Do the 416, bore size isnt where the power is-compression is.

Do exactly like my signature pretty much and you will be golden. I had a 416 and ran it for 2 years before she gave up and I bored to 426. Course in my case, sinking it in the water may have helped it to wear out faster lol..

What I have now can easily rival a stock honda 450r and hang with slightly modded ones.

Those shocks are pieces of crap. A friend of mine bought those for his 250R and the blown stock shocks were 1000 times better. You could literally lift the front of the quad up and drop it and watch the frame smack the ground with those shocks on their hardest settings.

I too will also suggest the KFX450R shocks. I run them on mine and they are as good as or better than any aftermarket shock (Works Pro-series with trp, Elka Stg 2's) I have ran on the front of my EX.

As for the engine, 11:1 or 10.8:1 piston, 04-05 450R carb (will need throttle cable), XR400R gaskets, and a stg 2 hotcam. That is I believe the best all around EX engine build out there. If it sucked, the majority of the people on this forum wouldn't be running it.

A 440 is just as reliable as a stock bore piston, it doesnt have any heat issues with the stock cooling equipment and heavy duty studs and HD timing chains are not needed.

I am living proof of this:chinese:

X2 on reliability of 440. Although if u do not have it properly jetted then you will have major heat issues. I M n the process and would definitely recommend a small fan. The 4" of. Raptor 700 works perfect for this bolted to the inside of the oil cooler and if u still have issues a larger oil tank and or extra oil cooler.

I beleave the top eye on the yfz shocks do need to be trimmed down i bunch to fit in the narrow 400ex mount.
