Ive heard the 04 and earlier 400exs have a bigger front sprocket than the 05 and newer ones, what difference does that small change make in acceleration and top speed?

More acceleration and less top speed neighbor

They changed the internal gearing as well. Old 400exs had a 15 tooth front sprocket, the new ones have a 14 tooth. The new style Ex's are suppose to accelerate a lil faster with same top speed according to dirtwheels.

i heard people say its not as fast on top end, but you could be right, i wonder where i could check to see what the actual top speed is, i didnt know they changed the transmission gearing too tho

Heres a link to a shootout that talks about the changes.

"The new gear ratios on the Honda are a slight improvement. It feels like it accelerates quicker and pulls better on top end."
