drive chain adjustment

i have a 2002 400ex and the chain is too loose how do i tighten it do i have to open the rear end?

Just loosen up the 4 Allen bolts and stick a screw driver in the slots on the carrier to the left. Pull it towards you and it will tighten. I always tighten mine to about an inch of slack so you don't wear the bearings. That's not what it says in the manual though.

how loose does the allen bolts have to be?

Loosen them enough until you can easily adjust the carrier

Quite loose, once you tighten the chain you tighten up the allen bolts. They need to be tight but not insane.
