hopefully someone can help me, I had to torch out the swingarm bolt on my 01 400ex. In the process, I also had to torch one of the bushings that goes into the engine case because the bolt was seaized in it. I've heard that Honda does not offer these bushings. does anyone know where I can buy new ones? does anybody make them aftermarket?

The easiest and most likely cheapest thing you could do is take a micrometer and measure what size bushing you need and go to a local bearing shop and they should be able to help you. I had to do the same thing on a friends bike and I just figured out the hole size, width of the steel plate, and then the bolt size and they found the bushing for the job.

http://www.motosport.com/atv/oem-parts/HONDA/2001/TRX400EX/SWINGARM

Check that out and see if you can find what you are looking for, particularly numbers 9, 10, 29, and 30. One of those might be it.

Gonna hafta get creative, maybe a bearing shop might have something. But I think your going to have to visit a truck spring shop and see if they got something you can shave down.

Thanks guys. I guess I will have to try and find something that will work. I'm surprised nobody offers these aftermarket. I've read dozens of posts of people having to cut the bolt out because they get seized.

you could take a regular 400ex swinger bolt bushing/spacer and have it turned down at a machine shop.

I actually just had that done for my cr250/400ex hybrid because the stock ex swinger bolt was to small for the cr250 engine case bushing.

Another guy on this site did a RM250/400ex hybrid and he used a pipe that was slightly bigger then the swinger bolt and cut a notch down it to make a swinger bushing/spacer.

Been a million machinist on the site asking what they could make. I've always been surprised this isn't readily available on ebay.

You are talking about the rubber bushing inside the engine cases right?

They are metal. It is the left and right engine case bushings that the swingarm bolt passes through.

Good to know. When I had mine apart I didnt think much of it except the SLATHER everything with never seize.

in all reality, the bushing in the case is nothing more than a motor mount hole. the bolt itself never moves in the frame or motor.
a simple verniers will be able to get a close size on the hole in the case and then measure the bolt and go to any machine shop pretty much and have um make ya a bushing. best material to use would be delrin cause then it wouldnt sieze as easy. but thats just my 2 cents

if there is a machinist out there that can make them, I would gladly buy a pair. I have one that is still in pretty good shape. I would post a pic, but i'm kinda new to this. how do I post a pic on here?

its gotta be very small to host it here. I use www.tinypic.com to host my stuff. Upload it there then link it in the thread.

here is a pic of the bushing, still has a piece of the rusted seized swingarm pivot bolt stuck in it

Id say its possible a machinist could make it or you might find one on ebay.

I've seen your dilemma many times over the years and sent this over to a friend of mine who sells lots of stuff on email. He intends to get his machinist to start making these and listing permanently on ebay.

I'd take what you have now to a machinist and see what he can do. It seems like yours is not ruined beyond repair.

Thanks QUAD2EXTREME, I will try a local machinist, if your friend can make anything in the near future, let me know. Thanks

Will do, I'm waiting for a new one from Honda:)

That would be easy to turn on a lathe. A local machine shop would make one out whatever you want.

I dropped off the one good bushing to a local machine shop, hes gonna make me 2 new ones. I will post pics and prices when I get them back.

the machine shop called and asked me what size the pivot bolt was so he knew what diameter to make the inside of the bushing. he thinks 15mm, but I didnt get my new bolt yet. anybody know what size it is?

15mm

or

.59"

I can measure more precisely in inches because that is what is marked on the dial.

Thanks for the info, I got my new pivot bolt today and the bushings are done at the machine shop. I will post pics later when I get them.

At least you got them. For others, it would be worth calling a few of the companies that sell used parts and see if they have ruined cases that they'd knock the bushings out and sell.

thats a good idea, or used cases on ebay

JOHNDOE83

$80 is a good deal, I payed $40 to have my bushing turned down.

If you think about shop time and hourly wages, you got a really good deal!

yes you're right. the machinist said he had 2 hours of labor into making them. I was just surprised, I was figuring 20 or 30 bucks, had no idea it took that much time to make a bushing

two hours is probably about right considering how far he had to turn them from the original diameter.

Don't forget the cost of stock to turn them out. How much does Honda ask for them?

01FOURHUNITEX
03-02-2012, 09:07 PM
Honda doesn't offer them, not sure why?

i could have sworn those came with the swingarm pivot bearing kit. i cut my bolt out years ago, but i drilled the bolt out of my cases rather than torch. maybe i got the bit that was the id of those bushings. dont really remember but looks like your good to go anyways.

No, those dont come with swingarm kits. The swingarm uses similar but shorter ones tho.

odd why honda doesnt offer these things.
