Anyone put a 400ex or 450r in a 250r chasis? Most agree the 250r was one of the best handling quads ever. Im sure someone has, just how did it work out & was it worth it? Xc btw, not mx or tt

Thanks

CJM will chime in here.. he told me several months ago he was wanting to do this. I say do it! But im NOT a 250R fan. (i dislike 2strokes)

I think it would be a bada** combo also.

I would love to see a build thread doing it.

One day, i want a 250R, all chromed and decked out like the one on here that got a quad of the month award a while back.. Ill see if i can find a pic of it to attach, but i just want one just for show purposes, not for riding..

I say go for it, and i know you will have CJM's vote to do it. (Not speaking for him)

Im sure many members wanna see it done. I havent heard of anyone doing it on here, since most members that have a 250R praise their quads.. Just me though, i havent been on this site very long.

@Chris you wouldnt have to tear apart a perfectly well 250r, just buy the frame off ebay or something for like $200 then throw a 400ex/450R (i would do 450R motor BTW) engine in the frame. In the Long run it would probably be cheaper to buy a junker 250r complete quad then buy the motor.

By the time you buy the 250R arms and what not it will be a VERY expensive build.

Check the Hybrid Thread and see if anyone has done it, but if they have i havent heard about it

I have seen a pic of the opposite.. 450R chasis + 250R motor...

Heres a pic. Looks very... Different haha

I found this on a 250R forum

Best chassis out there to do it on. I wouldnt waste a perfectly good 250r frame tho. Id go custom like walsh or such.

The absolute best thing to do would be to run a crf or trx 450 motor in one. The EX is very closely based on the 250r frame tho, not exact but quite close-thats why it handles so damn well.

I wanted to build a walsh 250r framed crf or trx 450 hybrid awhile ago, just costs alot of cash. You could put a 450 motor into a 400ex frame tho, its been done and works.

I wouldnt butcher a perfectly good 250r, but find a frame & go from there. A bit more costly but id get exactly what i want & not have a pile of parts to get rid of.... Handling wise, what is the big difference between the 400ex & the 250r. I hv a 400ex now & it has been a few years since i rode a 250r & i imagine it would hc felt different with a four stroke in it. I want the best handling quad with a nice strong, simple reliable motor. Of course, it would be pretty cool too!....

Why the crf over the trx motor?

That quad Cody posted is SICK! Anyway I'll be subscribed for this whatever way you go. I'd deff. go 250R frame/450R motor, and then buy a frame off ebay and go from there, just like others have said.

I had seen when he started that bike but never knew he was done with it curious to see it with plastics, that motor sits way back also. the motors cost as much as a used 450r does only advantage is I could use all my aftermarket 400 stuff def an idea!

450r motor doesnt fit in the stock 250r chassis very well. I had a junk 250r frame that i put a 450r motor in. I made it fit but wasnt right. Motor is too tall. I had to tilt the engine forward to fit any airboot on the carb. And the sproket didnt line up with the pivot bolt. It was an awesome quad but was never gonna be right. Chain would loosen up when compressed. So i pulled the motor and got a trx450r chassis for it. You would hafto extensively modify the upper rear shock cross brace and move the pivot bolt location and use a crf rocker cover.

Oic. Surfing the net on your phone at a red light doesn't sound too fun but whatever passes the time I guess.

It would be pretty counter productive to put a 400ex motor in a 250r frame even a trx 450r motor wouldn't really be an upgrade over the 250r motor unless you own one that's already built to the moon. Now you go with a crf450 or yfz or something along those lines you'd start getting your moneys worth. 400ex is hard to get the same power from and the trx450 motor is so heavy might as well just leave it where it belongs. Dirt bike motors are the way to go for a hybrid. Out of the box they put out quite a bit more power, but it's gonna cost you some money. Either way it's hard to beat a 250r motor though. If you can do the work yourself it's pretty easy to pull 65 horses out of it for about $1000. Try that with your 4stroke:P, just kidding, I have nothing against four strokes they just cost so much more to build and achieve the same power as a two stroke. All in all If you want a hybrid use a dirtbike motor, these big aftermarket companies use them for a reason. Check out the brand new Walsh build under the hybrid section.
