Ok I've done homework on this and am still getting a tick on the top end... Sure sounds like a valve tick... Just built this bike. I did a wiseco 416 with stage 2 hotcam, Kibblewhite valves and valve springs, HMF exhaust. I started it and got a tick. Did the research, (timing chain, valves ect...) Well i bought the 450 chain. Much quieter now but still ticking and almost a different sound. the Hot Cam says .005 on the intake and .006 on the exhaust. Ticking still. Got curious, and went back to .004 intake and .005 exhaust and its much quieter but still ticking...

WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE??? .003 and .004?????

The tensioner seemed to be in good working order as well as the guides...

HELP!

I'm not sure how loud your "tick" is....but 400EX's do have a little tick, I've had two an now one, both stock an built "tick" a little. Just put a louder aftermarket exhaust on an you won't notice it as much.

they generally just tick, what size jets do you have now that you have a 416?

There have been ALOT of members try to attemp to muffle the ticking for a long time, I dont think anyone has ever gotten rid of it 100%
i think everyone just kinda adapts to it or as dragon said, Buy a louder exhaust! lol

The hotcam is a more aggressive cam, its gonna tick even louder than usual. Dont worry about it so long as your valves are in spec.

I would say you still a lil bit lean and that does cause ticking "sometimes" if you havent changed your pilot jet I would think you need to either turn your a/f screw out more or need a bigger pilot jet.

152-165 is for mild builds once you bore cam and valve much bigger jets are needed if it were my guess I would think you need to be around 175-180 for a main jet and a 42 pilot jet.

Try turn your a/f screw out more and see if it helps at all?

I know my tick was loud and I changed to much larger jets and the tick is almost gone.

Just a thought, give it a try.

If you have an EX and it doesn't tick, that is when you start to worry.
