So as some of you may know, I'm in the process of putting my 400ex back together. Yesterday I had installed the front brakes (upgraded to yfz450 dual piston setup) and got the lines all bled.
The lever is nice and firm and everything seems good, except there is noticeable drag when I spin the wheel. I had inspected everything before putting it on, the rotor is in good shape, I cleaned and greased slide pins, used brand new fluid.
Im at a loss. any info would be appreciated. thanks.

Could be the thickness of the pads or the rotor.

Well before I had taken everything apart, I don't think there was any drag. If there was, not this much.
Is it possible that there's too much pressure /fluid in the system and its pushing the pistons out too far even without the lever pulled?

If you filled the reservoir up to the line it shouldn't. If you put new pads on and its spins I'd say that ok. Ride it some and use them and after pads wear to the contour of the rotor check again. If it still drags there is a problem.

When I put on the 450R caliper, new rotor and pads back in January on mine I noticed they dragged really bad too. I'm just gunna ride on them and be sure to use them alot to wear them in. I think any new set of pads and rotor is gunna drag at first because it's all basically brand new, and thick, so it all barely fits together.

jw why would you even want yfz or 450r brakes anyhow?

The yfz or 450r front brakes are dual piston instead of single (on the stock 400ex) so they provide more braking power.

So you could actually stop.. 400ex calipers suck. Go hop on a Yamaha and stop. It's a beautiful thing

FWIW I cant tell the difference between my buddies with stainless lines and yfz setup vs my stock setup with stainless lines.

Yeah I still got original brake pads(front and rear) on my 05 and I can skid ez on gravel even with studed tires but there very predictable and I can't bottom out the lever on the bar.. The 01 well I think those need new pads and maybe breded cuz they bottom out and don't have good stopping power. Anyhow I hope you can get yours to work good

You can deff tell a difference in the lever on dual piston brakes.

Since you changed the caliper... are they rubbing on the inside of the rim???

Actually, with the can-am front wheels, it was rubbing but I spaced it out and its still rubbing. Its definitely pad in rotor.

Squeeze the brake handle and pop the bleeder valve and tighten it and let the handle go... it could be over bled...

Did you change the Brake lever ?

Pop off the Break lever and see if the Dragging stops.

I replaced my lever with a Motion Pro 400ex lever and it applies presser when installed....causing my brakes to drag....I went back to the OEM lever and it fixed it.

Just a possibility.
