I rode my 99' 400ex today for the first time since getting the motor bored. it has a 87mm wiseco piston, WB r4 exhaust, Twin air air filter. the jetting is stock but i raised the clip on the needle one spot cause i felt it was way too rich last fall. Now after doing the break in today it seemed really hot. almost like it could melt the wiring harness that is by the top of the motor. The oil tank was so hot i couldn't even touch it. I wasn.t even riding hard so this is making me very weary. Is this normal? or am i just peronoid ? would lowering the needle do this or is it o.k. the temp outside today was 40 degrees f. Thanks!!

87mm is a 426 right?
If you are running that on stock jetting it is very lean and thats why it is running hot

last year it was a 416 and it was getting tons of carbon on the end cap of my pipe. it seemed rich so thats why i lowered the clip one notch. I heard stock jetting is best with the R4.

Yeah but not on a bored motor. I would go higher on the main before you burn it up.

87mm=416 cc
88mm=426 cc

Judging by the mods listed and the main jet you are way lean. You should judge by the plug color and not the color on the tail pipe. BTW my 400 is jetted with 155 mj and 40 pilot for my elevation and I am running stock piston, hot cam stage 1, moded airbox lid and PC T-4 and my plug is a soft colored brown but yet I still have soot on my silencer.

I hope this helps you out.
