i have finally decided to buy myself a enclosed trailer to haul the quads and other miscellaneous tasks. i have been looking for a like new used trailer because im not really wanting to pay the full price for new and lately there has been some great deals on nice used stuff out there. i was wanting to keep it around 14' to 16' in length and 7'minimum with to keep it half ton friendly.

so i came across a nice 8.5x14' mirage atv/snowmobile trailer. its a square nose with tandem axles. tires sit below floor(no fender wells). so my question is has anyone had experience with enclosed snowmobile trailers? is there any pros and cons compared to a regular enclosed floor/axle setup? do they tow well? i do not have any sleds and will mainly use it to haul quads with a half ton 04 dodge ram 1500

my dad loves ours 8.5x18 im pretty sure, tandem axle and it tows really well with the exception of gas mileage..we tow it with our mild mod 7.3 powerstroke though so it isnt to bad.

7.3 isnt in a half ton. What motor is in the dodge?

If the tires sit below the floor, how tall is the roof height? I'd probably look for a traditional style cause the wind drag of an 8.5 plus a little more on top than usual is going to be like a huge parachute on a 1/2 ton.

it has a 5.7 hemi. its a 2wd with a 6'' lift and 33'' tires so that will play a factor also.

i am unsure of the roof height but it looks to be just as tall as a standard enclosed trailer. i didnt think too much about wind drag but was more concerned about the loaded cargo sitting higher and making the trailer sway more while towing

I wouldn't tow anything that big with anything less than a 3/4 ton... I've towed a trailer like that with a 1/2 Chevy and it was dang near suicide... I turned around and headed back to swap trucks...

FWIW i pull my 24'x8' enclosed with my wife's '04 1/2 ton expedition, and it does just fine with an anti-sway bar. outpulls the crap outta my 5.4l superduty. trailer is taller than most and half-finished in front too.

Get a Weight Distribution Hitch like the link I posted and you will have no issues. Most people have issues towing trailers and blame it on the truck, when in reality the trailer is to large for the hitch. Weight Distribution hitches are worth their weight in gold!!!!

i do have a 3/4 ton diesel work truck i can also use but would like to use my cleaner half ton to pull the trailer also. i have pulled a older 7x14 utillity trailer with 4 quads and no trailer brakes without a problem and i do have lots of experience pulling large loads with a pickup. i know the 1/2 ton will handle a 16' with good trailer brakes. i think it comes down to knowing your limitations while driving. i was just wanting to know if the taller snowmobile trailers tow poorly due to there setup

I have the same thing:chinese:

but come on guys we pulled a 25 foot camper with a 5.4 f150, it also towed our 18x8.5 enclosed trailer, you had to lock it out of overdrive and let it rev 2500 rpm but it pulled it fine, the anti sway hitch does help a lot.
you shouldnt have a problem at all pulling a trailer that size except for the hemi's love to suck gas
