just finished a rebuild on the 400. took her out for a test run to shake it down and the bike wouldn't shift. went from first to second then nothing, then i was able to shift by pulling up hard with my foot with the clutch in. took it back to the garage and i was able to shift it while rocking the bike through all gears. so i tryd again and when i downshifted the bike stuck into second and wont come out! the shifter will lift up and can be pushed down but doesn't seem to catch at all. could this be from the shift forks being bad or did the shift star shear the pin that holds it in place. looks like im tearing it back down again.:ermm:

check the star that clicks the gears. When I got my 400ex it would do the same thing and it was just loose. just cost me a new gasket on the clutch side. Extremely easy fix

Hard to shift..

1. Damaged shift fork
2. Bent shift fork shaft
3. Damaged shift fork guide pin
4. Danaged shift drum guide groove

pulled the clutch cover tonight and the star was fine the problem seems to be with the part that turns the shift drum. it will shift the drum up or down then stick back. i don't think that part should move back and forth at all at least not on other trannys i've pulled apart? does this part move on all ex's ? looks like i'm splitting the cases this weekend.:ermm:

found it! spring came off the shift arm. preventing the arm from returning between shifts. :cuss:
