I just pick up a 1987 polaris cyclone 250X, I can't find much information about this model.

Does anyone know how many of these quads were actually produced ?

And was there any difference between the cyclone and the trailboss besides the motor performance and different color ?

I think the shocks were a bit different. yes the 87 is rare, it was the final year they made it. the had only made them for three years, 85-87.

Yeah they are pretty rare, I picked one up as well a long time ago, same year. Polaris pretty much took one of their snow mobile engines and dropped into a simple atv frame. Hard to find for sure, but they can be quick. Hold onto it, seriously aren't many around.

All the parts catalogs I go to, all claim the cyclone was made only in 1987.

Yeah, if I remember right the shocks were sticking straight up or something of that nature. A little odd.

The reason for that is because they used a strut suspension and not dual a-arms with shocks.

Ahh yes thats right! Thanks for the pics there too, nice little reminder. I didnt have mine for long. Somebody ended up offering me decent money (mostly for the engine) on something that was in quite bad shape so I took the offer.

I changed out the stupid front tires the previous owner had on the quad, I think they were rear tires off a smaller atv. Now all the rims are gold and it has regular front tires on it.

I think I got a good deal on this machine, payed $500 but it needs front struts really bad. It's like riding a quad with pogo sticks for front shocks.

How fast was your cyclone ?? I have not got mine running yet, I need to clean the carburetor, it's flooding really bad.

the front end is the same as the trailblazer/boss but the rear suspension is way different

I had just gotten mine running and was gonna see how it went the next day. That same day I got the offer. I sold it. I got the quad for free in about a hundred pieces. Maybe literally, but oh well a little work and made a bit of money. Which at the time then went to my 300ex. I think it would have been quick though to be honest. looked like a good engine. And like I said, they pretty much took a 2-stroke snowmobile engine and threw it in there, so Id assume it wasn't slow at the least.

They also came with a 38mm Mikuni carb.
