Well today i was performing matienence on my 450 and on my brothers 400 i put on his nerfs, fixed his exhaust and changed oil. It made me realize how nice the 400's are just because theyre so easy to work on, its stupid simple..I decided to take it for a little spin after..definately doesnt have the 48hp my 450 has but it felt good to be on it again. Im definately picking up another one some day! but for now..i'll just ride one of the 2 we own :D Has anyone else came back to the 400's from a diff big bike?

When I picked up my 450 I never let go of my 400. Makes for a great backup/friend/gf quad.

I have no intentions of ever letting mine go as I have to much time and money invested in it and the sentimental value it holds to me is nearly priceless.

My EX will be something I will not part with till I die.

I had 2 400EX's...one for my son who doesn't ride hardly anymore. I turned his into my KTM/Honda Hybrid. I still have my 99' EX that was bought in summer of 98', its had alot of mods an money in it, to much too part with, an I loved racing this quad for years so doubt I'll ever part with it unless I give it to my son someday in my will. I heard the first yr EX's were made with extra good parts....?....I have a zillion hours on it an its been a 416, 426, 440 an now a 406....it still has the original crank, timing chain, timing chain adjuster.....2 yrs. after I got it it went under water...got water out an drove it a mile to the truck. Took forever to get all the water out of the case, friends said to sell it because it wouldn't last very much longer....lol. Ohh....it still has the ORIGINAL clutch, just put on stiffer clutch springs soon after I got it, although I've gone through at least 12 or 14 clutch cables...I always changed oil after 10 hours of hard racing an about 20 or so hours of trail riding. Bullet proof is a pretty good description of these quads if you take halfway care of them.

i feel the same as all you guys. i would like to switch it up, but i just have wayyyy too much time, effort, and money in my 400. i'm starting to think that before i ever get rid of it i'll just do a 650 swap.

I enjoyed my 400ex i had but for the riding i do my 450 fits me better. Now where I went riding a few weeks ago I could do some fun trail riding on the ex which was a pain in some places on my ltr450. Id pick up another for a solid trail quad I could beat on and dont have to worry about but it would have to be cheap for me to get it

One more for that list. I have WAY to much into my 400, I'll keep it until I die. Plan on getting a 450 soon just to have a nice dune/race/track machine, but I'll always have a nice torquey 400 for the trails.

More power is always better, but I find a 400ex has a much more forgiving throttle than the 450 does. 450 needs throttle to have power, EX can walk around like a tractor.

I went from a Trx450r to a Yfz450 to a Yamaha Banshee to a 400ex. I can barely tell a difference in power between the 450r and 400ex. They both had about the same mods done too. Obviously you can rev the 450r a little higher and harder but that's all. I actually prefer the 400ex, it's really smooth and usable power but stays true to Honda's SOHC engines and delivers hard at the very bottom when you need it for quick boost.

I mean my 450 definately blows my 400 away in the dunes and i dont think i'd trade it dune wise..but when i get into reallyyy technical sections the 400 seems alot easier to ride..haha..Theyre both great quads..just for different things. I like the feeling of my slim 450 and how light it is though..

Almost everyone I know has upgraded to the 450 by now. Funny thing is I dont have any issues keeping up with them in the dunes or trails. Yes Im a bit slower but not by enough margin for it to matter.

I hate selling my toys,

I still have my '99 400ex with some goodies and no plans to sell

an '06 trx450r port/polish/cam exhaust etc.

an '06 yfz450 stroked/cam/exhaust etc.

and I just picked up a new '08 left over 400ex

for woods I can run my 400ex using most of the power but on my 450's I am limited to about 1/2 the performance because every time I open it up and grab a gear I'm all over the breaks trying to get front end down and trying to miss trees

400ex's rock I wish i had a job that actually paid enough for me to do that haha, 15 in this town doesnt have many choices..I'm on my way to being a 12 sport HS athlete so that takes even more time away from being able to work sadly..my true sport.

i really truly enjoy my 400ex.

Thats the glory of a 400ex over any 450. You can putt around on them and not have to worry about ripping your arms off, or them overheating but the power is there if you need it.

400ex's are MONSTERS for hills. on a 450 if you give the throttle a quick hit, your pulling the front end up or spinning the tires when a 400 just seems to smoothly gain the power.

I about have my 400 the way i want it, but the sad part is the big $$$ is still yet to come. Yes your all already know what im talking about... suspension.

Once i get my 400's kinks worked out, i never want to sell it. Dont get me wrong i will probably sell it for a 450R but it 4sure wont be the last one i own.

Since I got my 450 I have rode my EX maybe 5-10 hours in 2 years haha.

I can hammer tight technical sections as fast as I can with an ex, mind you there is alot more work involved. Once you open up the 450's you see the potential.
