Hi guys, I have a question concerning my car.

I have a 1997 Toyota and the exhaust had broke off so I had to cut it off recently. Now, I actually like the way it sounds.

My question is, Is running without an exhaust bad for the engine or is there negatives to running like this?

You will be ok.

You'll be fine. In other states you would get a ticket, but since Iowa laws are so damn lenient for cars the cops won't even care.

OK cool. I live in a small town with a part time cop and there is a bunch of loud vehicles around so I think I will be good on that part.

I just had a couple people say that it isn't good on them but really never knew.

On a low power engine power may be worse and it may have trouble staying running at idle. But depends what spot came off. If you want to be loud but quiet by cops you can fix the exhaust and add a $50 manual cut out into the exhaust system and at the pull of a lever you can go from open header to quiet as factory in 1 sec any time you want. People say back pressure and valves but if people knew how a engine works none of that matters engine being safe wise you just have to make sure not to be running lean.

With the exhaust off there is no back pressure and in a short time your going to burn out your exhaust vales.

Please explain how a manual cut out with open with the pull of a lever? I cant wait to hear this!

false, there's more than enough back pressure from the catalytic converters and the exhaust manifolds... i've been running an electric cutout on my trans am for a while now, along with many many other people on their own cars.

unless its a 1997 toyota supra, just put a muffler back on and save yourself the embarrasment

Guess again pipeless, unless you have a minimum of 51/2 lbs your going to burn them! Your cat only has at best 3lbs.

on an EFI car with stock manifolds and y pipe with cats? i don't think so. your stats may be true for a carbureted engine which can't adjust for the decrease in back pressure, but not on an EFI car. i'll contact you if i ever burn my exhaust valves :o ;)
