Home Air Filter cut to fit, and looks awesome.

Also hoping it will stop some of the water from gettin up around the plug so it wont stutter when i go through water.

Working on the jetting now..

It is currently 42 pilot, 3rd notch on needle, 2 1/4 turns out on a/f.

I have tried the main jet at 155 and if you held the throttle WOT it would rev up and cut out and rev up and cut out

I tried the main a 168 and it did the same thing.

Tried the main at 190 and it wouldnt even start.

For the heck of it i tried the main at 125 and it idled pretty good and would rev all the way up at WOT but 0-3/4 throttle it didnt do worth a crap. Tried taking airbox lid off and it helped a little with the 168 in it. But still revved up and cut out.

Any input would be helpful.

White Bros E series slip on (just repacked it yesterday) , P&P head, kibblewhite valves, 11:1 Wiseco, 426cc, stage 2 cam

Cant check the main jet at idle, gotta ride it. Im running a 172-175 main with my 426 and mods.

dxcody

but i cant ride it because it just bogs.. So im guessing my main isnt the problem?

Do this: Clean the carb, check the float and float needle. Put in a 165 main, needle 3rd notch Ride it, it bogs take off the airbox lid and try.

Id say you might be closer to a 160-165 main if anything.

Alright did everything, and it still didnt run wroth a crap. SO i switched carbs and ran that jetting and it ran really good. SO i think my carb needed rebuilt. But for now i am going to use the other one.

With that jetting it was bogging out quite a bit and it deffinatly didnt feel like i was getting full power, and that was me riding it around the yard. So i think you called it CJM, i think i need to have around a 160 main in there. If i stabbed the throttle it cut out a little and then revved up about half and started popping like it was hitting the rev limiter.

Im going to the store to pick up a 155, 160, and maybe a 158. Sound good?

Id pick up a 165 and 162 as well just to be sure.

Also try adjusting the needle down one notch towards the pointed end (bottom), more fuel or try moving it up a notch and see what happens as well.

got it running good. Then during the test ride it just shut off on me in the drive way. Locked up.

Valve snapped off and smashed the piston. IM DONE BEING A MECHANIC!

I suck at working on things.

Aw man that really sucks.

Wonder why it happened?

dxcody

I dont know. I just puttin in the driveway in 1st gear and it just shut off.

Went to turn it over by hand and it would only go a half turn.

Took the head off and the end of a valve had broken off and was laying on top of the piston. Didnt bust the piston, or puncture it, just dented it. I guess that shows you how low of RPM's i had it at when it did that.

Might have been stressed previously somehow. Does thw valve guide or springs have any noticeable wear?

If it were me Id replace the piston and all the valves and continue on.

dxcody

nope, the valve springs and everything look great. The springs are still tight, and everything.

You should see what it did to the spark plug.

What kinda valves should i get?

Im gonna go ahead and get new valves.

I liked my kibble whites but i guess ill just go stock?

I never had an issue with stock. Id check the springs while you got it apart to ensure they are in spec, I checked mine on the last motor rebuild and they were worn out. I scored a set of KW valve springs for a song on a motosport clearance.

dang man that sucks!!! BUT this is another case of broken KW valve.. seen it to many times over on the 450r forum. i did have a pic of one broke but i cant seem to find it:ermm: any way i got ferrea but not sure if they make them for the ex?? personally your not gonna get much better than oem there awsome valves

Dude boneless, i am soo tired of having just horrible luck.

But my luck did turn a little tonight. I called up my buddy who lives close and he had a brand new set of 400ex valves KCY (OEM) valves he gave me for free!

So i Cleaned up the piston, smoothed it out REALLY good. It smoothed out really nicely btw (the dent was minor, like i said i was going like 2 MPH, but anyways, now i have the engine completely back together.

Another problem i have now is, i turned the key on, pressed the button and something popped and now i have no power. I think i may have blown a fuse.

THe one thats in there is a 15, is that the stock size?

A 15 amp is what is in mine.

This guy on another forum was bragging about the Kibble White valves and how good they are. I had thought about the next time I do a rebuild on the head putting them in. After reading this I might have to stick with the OEM valves.

i would. I always bragged on mine, thats what was in there, and they are $$$ so i figured they were top $ valves... NO!

It snapped clean off. Like seriously is looks like it got cut with a freaking water jet i snapped so clean.

The exhaust valve was the one that broke off, and i had an intake valve on the same side (left) that was bent. I know it was probably from the broken piece of the valve hitting it but stilll, i will stick with stock and i would trust wiseco. If they build there valves like their pistons, i trust them.

I thought i had the stainless steel ones, but i had the black diamond ones.

Damn, that sucks man.. I've heard bad things about KW valves in 450s, but in a mild 400ex.. Keep your chin up buddy, you'll be a seasoned vet. working on these engines soon haha

If it snapped off that clean I'd say something went wrong inside the engine. If it was a rough edge that means there was a defect in the metal. I've got the BD KW valves in mine. I'll deff. post something if I ever have a problem with mine.
