I belive the TRX450R is supposed to be pretty easy to put in. If you wanna do something that will take some work but be badass you could do a CR500.

All depends on your riding style. Theres lots of motors that will fit in there but imo i think hondas should stay hondas

I know for the 250r the trx450r motor is too tall. Not sure how much more height you have with the 400ex frame.

theres a 450r conversion: http://www.exriders.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=476648 (sick work BTW J51S)

and a 250r conversion: http://www.exriders.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=477981 (Lookin good JohnDoe)

both being completed now! I like the look of the 450r engine. Looks to be an 04/05 that engine he's using too

Ive thought about trying a KTM 300/330/380 2 stoke engine.. they are kind of hard to find though.

if i remember correctly the yz426f motor needs to be spaced over .25 inches on the sprocket side of the motor to align the chain. make radiator mounts and if i had to do it again i would make a custom oil tank as well as make the upper motor mount removeable from the frame. i think i still have the front motor horns i made for mine. the frame rail by the rear shock mount i notched for the intake and welded in a tubular gusset and plated the tube.

If your thinking about swapping in a single cylinder 4 stroke engine under 600cc, just buy a 450 or Raptor 700.

I recommend shoping for a complete bike so you have all the parts needed or atleast have parts to match up and re-use. You could also re-sell anything that you dont use or use it on another project.

motor carb wireing and kick start is litteraly all he needs after that its pretty much custom. im sure you could find a deal on a bike and part out what you dont need and make your money back though.
