Well , for my 18th birthday my girlfriend surprised me with a Nikon d3000 with a nikkor 18-55mm lense. That's about as far as I got because I have practically zero experience with slrs.. Anything at all will help lol..

When taking shots I have to use the flash or everything is very dark. When taking the water pictures without a flash, I tried like an iso of 1600 with the shutter speed 1/500. Am i completely wrrong on this or what.

The shots look pretty good considering this is your first time... If your using the camera in AUTO then the on-camera flash is going to pop up anytime it sees your photo as underexposed. (Unfortunately most on camera flashes make the lighting way to harsh.) Your already figuring out ISO it sounds like... When you did ISO 1600, how did your photo look? I'm not sure of how the d3000 handles higher ISO (Whether it's to grainy or not), but 1600 shouldn't be bad. Try shooting at a lower shutter speed on the water (1/60-1/125) if you can... The slower you shoot the more of an effect of movement the water will portray.

What else do you want to know? What kind of shooting do you want to do, and how serious do you want to be with it?

Also, books like DSLRS for dummies, and forums like nikoncafe will help you along the way.

The water shot was not on auto, just the quad pics.

The higher iso with a 1/500 shutter was still too dark to see even in a very well lit white room without the flash...

I would like to photograph bikes and quads mostly, moving objects but probably a good bit of still images also.. This is just a hobby I have always wanted to get into but never had enough money to get started...

What mode were you shooting in? I started in auto, went to shutter (s), and now almot always shoot in aperture (a).

Also, at 1/500th indoors your exposure is going to be very dark, even with flash and a higher ISO.
