if you want to be realiable and quick go with a 416 wiseco 11:1 stage 2 cam pipe ONLY cometic mls gaskets GT studs spal fan timming chain NEW tentioner and 450r carb. that setup will be just as good if not better. with a 440 you should do all that AND a oversize oil tank and breing is not were power is made its compression .

sorry i suck at typing on a laptop

i like my 440 in comparison to my 416 and with almost 600 miles on my 440 this past summer had no issues with it. I didnt have any problems with my 416 either though with 2500 miles or so on it when i went to my 440.

a 426 will rev a bit faster than the 440, thats about it. the 440 will have more torque and more peak hp with the same compression and cam in both machines. the 440 is quite a bit more power than a 416 of the same compression will be in the same setup also. the low end is much better and it pulls harder up top by comparison.

if it was me, id go 440 again in a heart beat.

just my .02 though after much deliberation and testing of all of my setups to have a good basis to go off of.

the reason i say go with 416 over 44 is because the oiltank and heat issues AND if it needs bored again he can go 426 with a 440 youl have to press in a new sleve. after its wore

lol i know the reason why you suggested a 416. lol thats always the reason, its just not a real good one.

after riding mine all summer, i had no problems with heat. it actually ran cooler than my 416 with a 3 degree key ran when it was running cool. jetting it is key, if it is jetted properly there arent any issues with it.

i didnt see over 210 at all riding in temps as high as 90+ with high humidity. maybe a whole day hammering it in dunes or something like that would cause a bit of issue but imo it wouldnt be any different with a 416, 426, or a 440. the same oil tank, cooler, and other modifications are suggested for those bores in the same applications.

just my .02 though,

440, good piston, good exhaust, stg2 or 3 cam, oversize oil tank will do the trick. I am running with and beating 450's with full pipes and such.. Never had a issue with over heating.. Alot will tell ya to go with a 16 or 26. Yes they will prob run just as well. Bottom line is any one of them built right will work extremely well.. Best part is given the 450's are beasts but even with a built 400 it is less maintenance then the 450 bikes..

see the reason im debating on these different bore kits is because ive always heard 440s were bad. but never ridden one i have owned 3 400exs with mods but no bore kits as far as i know .now i have ridden a modded 450r with pipe jet kit k/n filter programmer new tires and it didnt feel any faster than a 400 i had but maybe a little snapier at the most im not understanding why everyone says a 450 is so much faster than a 440 modded out

A test report I read says the 400 to 416 will beat the 440 on top end, reason is the piston is lighter. I've had 400,416,426 an 440...its a built 406 right now for past several yrs. I would go 406 or 416. An I would port the head, just the intake though, leave the exhaust alone, maybe just a clean up. The 450's are just bad for drag races. You can build up good HP on the 400EX's but that doesn't change the transmission gearing, The 450R' are just better gear ratios there. My brother in law 450r' with full CT pipe, hrc cam an jet kit is a freaking monster that keeps up an sometimes beats his sons bored, ported, tommey piped Banshee. They both know how to ride. I don't see any built 400ex beating either one. I can't come close with mine except for different gearing an 18" I can barley hang for 100', by 100 yds they are leaving me, by 300 yds....I'm long topped out an they still have gears...lol. I put 20" rears on an stock gearing an they get me off the line an cruise away, but at 300 yds I'm not as far back...lol. Now go to a short tight track section, or woods racing an all bets are off, The 400EX was built for tight section an low end, never for top end, the 450's rule there. Want a top end dragger....go with a 450

I would go with a 416. Ive had a 416 and a 426, they both make great engines. My buddy has a 440 and I walked all over him with my old 416 and still do with my 426. 416's and 426's make more realiable engines and can make great power with the right supporting parts to go along with the bore job.

My 440 beats bored, ported, piped banshees and 450s all day long, 416s and 426s dont stand a chance.

The piston weight makes no change in anything.

id buy another new cylinder, have the sleeve pressed out and a 440 one pressed in again in a heart beat if something happened to my 440 now.

the 416 was fun but it was still mild compared to how my 440 runs by comparison.

Personally a 426 fan here, but i have never had a 440.

I had a 400, 416, and now a 426. None of which have been the same engine.

My 426 is by far the best engine i have had, but it is built far superior to any of my other engines i have had. I mean this thing is a freaking monster. All the goods.

Im anxious to try a 440 here soon, probably next winter. But a 450R is also in the picture too. Not sure which one yet. Hopefully both!

Good Luck with your choice.
