Whats goin on guys? I currently have a 2007 400ex, but I just came across a guy that is looking to trade his 2005 trx450r because he wants an electric start. Are there any problems that I should look for or be aware of for this year? The bike has the hrc cam and hrc baffle, other than that, the bike is stock. Thanks guys! Brian

They are a solid bike, look for the typical, beat up/cracked frame, bent bars ect. Also check the oil filter for shavings to see if the crank is ready to blow. Personally I also check the airfilter/air box. If it's super dirty it probably hasn't been well taken care of.

Thanks Pacheco. I never would have thought to check the oil filter for that...

basically the same as said, just check it out like any other bike, no real common problems besides the crank. If the guy will let you, take a new oil filter and cut the old one apart to check for shavings because alot of times the shavings wont be on the outside of the paper when its just starting to go. just take a razor blade along both ends of the paper and pull it out

ok. Dumb question, where is the oil filter located on these bikes?

how are these bikes with starting? The 400ex has a hard time in the cold unless you put in a bigger pilot jet.

Also, what will the HRC cam and baffle to for the quad?

Mine takes a few kicks if the weather is cold but once it's been started it'll start first kick every time. The baffle gives a little more exhaust flow, similar to a slip on aftermarket pipe. The hrc cam is a more aggressive cam compared to the stocker and gives you more power, mostly mid-range and top end.

Is there any way to take the oil filter out without first draining the oil?

just take the filter out, only the oil thats in the filter will come out

ok. I figured that the oil would drain out if I took it out.

You can always tilt it on it's side if you don't want to spill any. There won't be much to come out, though.
