I was considering doing a 416, 11 to 1 piston, with stage 2 hotcam and port and polish on my 06 400ex to spunk it up a little. Local shop qouted me $1185 for everything parts and labor witch i thought was pretty good, but he told me I would be ahead selling my 400 and just buying a 450r. The more i think about it the more it makes sense, but Im not sure what would be better. what do yall think??

Its 100% completely up to you.

Price wise: Yes, you will be much better off getting a 450R if you are going to pay a dealer to build your engine for you.

However if you did the work yourself, cut that price in half (probably a little more than half actually)

Around here, your quad would easily go for, $2300-2500 no problem and 450R's (04-05) easily are going around here for right around $3000

The 06+ are about $3700.

So like i said, its up to you. With how much the dealership would charge you to do it, its basically going to be about the same, and you would save some money if you bought the 04-05

The 450R stock is just as reliable as the 400ex once you upgrade it to a 416.
I heard the guys that have the 06+ have a horrible time trying to keep the valves in spec and the 06+ is much more maintainence but other than that the 06+ is the way to go.

Now for my opinion: Go and buy a 450R
Everytime i sell a 400ex i say i am going to buy a 450R but i always end up buying another 400ex. But the next time, i swear i am going to buy a 450R because a fully decked out 400ex, just doesnt compare to a 450R (which is my opinion, i know plenty of people are going to disagree with me)

Do whatever you want to do though.

Agree ^^^ All depends on what your doing with the 416EX....are you racing, recreation....? My brother in law has a 04' 450r with the HRC cam an jetted an its faster than my built 406EX....then he put a CT Racing full exhaust on it like I told him an it just down right fly's. The 416 is going to be pretty much bullet proof an go more years an hours without maintenance. Racing, go with the R, Recreation go with the 416, want to beat your friends in some drags....R again.

I guess i will just have to ponder on it for a while. I hate to get rid of my 400 because I have so much time and effort in to it but maybe it would be better to stop while im ahead and go with the 450. Then again If its only worth 2500 I will probly just keep it cause I could not part with it for that cheap, $3500 and I would probly let it go. On ebay 'clean' 06 400s look to be going in the $3000 range with stock plastics and without all the add ons. Thanks for all the opinions, i will think about for a while.

I have both a 2005 400ex and a 2006 450r. The 450r I have is worked some but not crazy and it is considerably faster than the stock 400ex. The 450r is geat if I am riding with other sport quads at a decent speed, but it does not like to put along in first or second gear. If I am going riding with guys who are on utility atvs then the 400ex is much better suited for the slower speeds but still has a lot of pep when you want it. In my opinion it really depends on how much you want to have reverse. If you can live without reverse sell the 400ex and buy a 450r. If your wanting to have motor work done to make the 400ex faster its time for a 450r.

do you do alot of sand riding? if so Im gonna suggest just getting a banshee. ive owned and built a couple just for trail riding, ive never rode in the sand before though, well....except for here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrKmREruZnA

that was my brother riding, but it was our first quad

Another big thing is how much your dealership would give a trade in value twards a 450R

They may give you a real good deal. Just talk to them because that would be much easier than trying to sell it on your own.

If you can swing it. Buy a 450r and keep the 400ex for a backup. Alot depends what you are goings to do with it. The 450r was built for the track. The 400ex is a great woods trail riding machine. The 450r requires more maintenance than the 400ex do to the higher compression motor. I'm partial to the 400ex for its reliabillty I I was dune riding or hillclimbing all the time I'd go for the Bandsee. That's my 2 cents worth.

I had wanted to build my 400..but with quads you never get the money out that you put in. the way i look at it, when you do mods its like pissing money away...in the name of fun ;) I bought a 450 figuring it'd be a heck of alot faster then my built 400 plus better suspension (what i really wanted) and hold its value a little better. So i picked up an 06 which stock has a 12.5:1 compression and a better air intake then earlier trx's. And it flat out rips! plus it has HRC kit and intake so it moves out and has crazy torque too.

Personally I like them both, I have my 400 and there is way too much money sunk into it to sell it for what I want realistically. Could I sell it for a good price and buy a 450R and start over-oh for sure.

My plan is to keep the 400 and buy a 450,t hat way when one breaks I got a back up.

I would like to keep it and just buy another wheeler but that is not going to happen$$. I live 100 miles from the waynoka ok dunes so we ride alot in the summer and last year we went to Glamis for a week, and the ol EX has never let down yet. I will never buy a banshee. I may see what is outthere and what I could get trade but im kinda leanig toward keeping it and doing the work.

I loved my 400, and my brother has it its still an awesome bike. But try sitting on a trx450! the ergonomics are sooo much better imo. much slimmer tank so its alot more of a natural sitting position.

I would just do the work to the 400. I have both a 450r and a 400ex and I take my 400 over my 450 any day. I mean IMO everyone has 450's these days, it always refreshing to see a nice built 400ex. But again, do what you want, its your money :)

It's totally up to you man. I would ride a 450r if thats doable and see what you like better personally. A lot of it really depends on the riding you do as has been mentioned. I know how you feel though with your EX being worth more to you than what it is realistically worth lol. I have a 426 and love it. I mostly ride trails, wheelie, etc. That being said I never really drag against my buddies and all the riding I do now days is recreational. If your going to race at all I would deffinetely go with the 450.

Lol I may be the odd one out here but because my chassis has so many upgrades and there's so much money into that part of the to quad I plan to motor swap for the 450r engine when the time is right. It's worth the labor for me to keep my setup.

If your going to stay in woods riding id keep the 400ex. They are so awesome for woods and I loved mine for that. Now if its just dunes or open stuff or even mx then yes id get a 450 for sure
