lt80 no start

My son's 06 lt80 will not start. I was trying to check for fuel and spark tonight when I discovered it only sparks when you first push the start button and let off of it. You can hold the button for say 20 seconds and it will only spark for 1-2 seconds at the beginning and end. Do you think I need a new magneto? Is there a way to check the adjustment on my magnet first?

Stators can get weak. You test them with a ohm meter. (approx 175 reading)
Dirt/mud in the flywheel/stator has caused this.
You may want to trim the spark plug wire ends to make sure there isn't a problem there.
FYI: the spark plug wire screws on to the CDI/coil and the plug cap.
