What is the best suggested setup for upgrading the front end of my 86trx. Specifically spindles hubs calipers etc. I heard 400ex has interchangeable parts.
I look forward everyone's opinion.

400ex is better and lighter, but the brakes are downgrade. You can get 88 or 89 250r font end(same brakes) and it will be somewhat better. 400ex is very close to 88/89 250r, major difference is the spindle metal(aluminum) and is somewhat different. Bad news is if you want to keep your 250r brakes or get brakes close to them, you need caliper adapters(~$200) or buy yfz450 calipers.

You can also buy 06+ 450r spindles/hubs and calipers and have the same geometry as 400ex with the benefit of better brakes than the 400ex. The 88-89 hubs will also bolt up to this setup.

isn't the camber or camber really messed up using this. Something about needing to use a 3/4" longer top a-arm?

It's no different than using 400ex spindles, the 04/05 450r setup is probably what you're thinking of.

I spoke with Doug at roll design recently asking about using 450r spindles on 250r arms, he told me it is a bad idea to switch spindles like that. He said the 450r spindles require longer upper a arms. I know some people have done this swap with success. He also told me the best and cheapest front end set up for the 250r is 400ex spindles with yfz450 brakes. They bolt right up..
I bought my whole setup, 400ex spindles yfz450 callipers, master cylinder, and braided lines for $80;)

How does he figure that when the only difference between the 06+ 450r spindles and 400ex are the caliper mounts? People have swapped them onto 400ex's without having to make a single frontend adjustment.

i love my 400ex spindles and yfz calipers, dirt cheap, aluminum, easy to find, only a couple years old, stops on a dime.....

Talk to him, he's the pro. I'm just relaying the info.. I also asked Mike Walsh about LT450 spindles as they are supposed to have the best geometry available and he also said the only interchangeable spindles with the 250r are 400ex...

just been reading this thread, i have an 88 250R so i can just fit the 400ex spindles and YFZ450 calipers and it will be 100% no other mods? or do i have to change master cylinder, brake lines, hubs etc etc?

Yup, direct bolt on. I have not mounted mine yet as I'm waiting for my new king pins to arrive but according to the 400ex section it is bolt on and go, no adaptors or anything.. oh I guess it has to be the yfz450 only, the yfz450r brakes Will not work... Check this link out.

Thanks guys. Looks like the 400ex spindles and yfz450 calipers up front.
Now...
I assume the rear yfz450 caliper will also work for the rear caliper replacement on a 250r?
Please correct or confirm.

I'm not saying it won't work, but I have never heard of anyone doing this before.. I do however have a complete 450r rear brake setup I would be willing to sell..:D

the quad is the yfz450 and dirtbike is yz450f. Why would you want to replace a good working 250r caliper w/ another,it works as good if not better than most newer ones out there.
