This sounds stupid but my 400ex did this when I bought it. The first thing I did was set the idle higher and it never happened again.

Honestly there's so many things that could cause this behavior, but try idling it up a little higher, it's not hard to do and it's worth a shot right?

Well the damn massive exhaust leak sure isnt helping..now is it?

Stickman400
06-03-2012, 10:16 PM
Rohr I tried that, it did help, but it still coughed and choked at times, it didn't die, but that's just because it was giving it so much gas. I also don't want my idle so high that when I click it into gear it sounds like I'm shredding the transmission. And CJM, I know that is a big problem and is probably part of the problem I am having, that stupid Big Gun is getting really annoying with all these problems it's given me. I'm ordering an HMF performance series tomorrow. I'll see if the exhaust is the problem. I'll sell that scrap metal for cheap to one of my friends.

Or a Motoworks, that'd be good too. Just sayin. Lol

It did survive a 4th gear end over end crash after all :P

Well I went to order the HMF straight off of their site and it kept declining my order. I tried using my credit card and my moms and it turned them both down over and over. So I decided to go on ebay to look for the system. I found a guy selling them for $490 and free shipping. Off of HMFs site it was $560 with shipping. So I ended up saving $70 because of HMFs ****ty site. Oh well, their lose.:D I ordered it with a black pipe and black turn down tip too since the red tips are cherry and not Honda red.

Well I finally got my HMF today aswell as my rotor, after 2 1/2 weeks of wating after ordering. The install went pretty easy except for trying to pry the silencer out get the spacer in there (I had to put 3 nuts in there for now because I didn't have another steel spacer), you need a helper or 3 arms. And yes, before anyway asks I did put in new crush gaskets. Anyway it sounds alot throatier and deeper than my Big Gun did, but also screams just as much when you're in the higher RPMs. I haven't taken it for a ride yet since I didn't get home from work until 10:30. I'll take it out tomorrow and see if I feel anymore throttle response or power, I doubt it, but you never know. I do plan on PC the tip red sometime, I was going to order it red, but the red on HMFs site looked more candy red then honda red, so I went with black. I got quite a few pics from different angles, I think it looks WAY better than the Big Gun, it's also is going to easily clear my caliper, you can see just from how far it's spaced out when you look down from the top. I think the reason the Big Gun was twisting and hitting is because it didn't have a mount down at the bottom like the HMF does. That's why it was twisting, because there was no supprt down there by where it attaches to the header. Anyway enough my babbling, on to the pics!

Well the exhaust is pretty nice. Alot throatier and deeper tone and has a little more powwer just from the seat of the pants feel. It didn't fix my idle issue though. It stills starts and idles fine when it's cold, but after you ride it for about 15 or 20 minutes and let it idle it starts coughing, and sputtering and eventually dies within 1 minute. Idk where to look other than the carb or intake. I did notice when I was going WOT down the road it seemed to loose some power up top out of nowhere, like when I went over 1/2 throttle it didn't gain any speed or power. It felt like it was just bogging it out or something. It's hard to explain but I think you guys know what I'm talking about. It went away after I slowed down and turned around to head back to tthe house. Anyone have an idea on what to check? Or why it would do it when it gets hot?

It sounds like the carbs dirty or your jetting is off.

195 with my mods sounds about right. I'm thinking about taking the bowl off and cleaning the jets out and everything. Idk, it's starting to make me made that I get everything on it perfect, and then some stupid little problem pops up. I may check it thins weekend if I feel like it. I may have something else taking up my time....;)

I'd still give the fuel line or the petcock a try too. My KM100 has the exact same problem, and it's because the tanks rusty and the petcock gets jammed up.

Figured I would bump this thread since I'm doing a little mini rebuild this winter, sort of. I'm taking some things off and having them PC'd too match everything else. Here's a pic of everything I'm doing, everything on the left is being done in red, the 4 things on the ight are going black.

Well I finally got my parts back from the PCr. I just got my new springs from Jet yesterday so I dropped them off to get done when I picked everything else up, they should be done next week. Everything looks pretty good, I think it has just enough color variation that it looks good without over doing one another. The red hubs and spindles really pop against the black of the rims and a-arms. Starting to run outta **** to do to it, lol.

Got a couple more pics. Got my rear caliper assembled and on, not sure if I like the black PB block off, might make it red later. Also snapped a pic of my front shocks on the bench to give you guys an idea of what they look like with the brighter red on the tender springs, looks really good. Way better than the maroon it had. Also snapped a pic of my Vapor that I have fitted up to custom fit above the bar pad, looks really good compared to having one of Trail Tech's huge clamps to put it in. Sorry about it being so dirty. I went riding in a local sand quarry right before it started getting really cold back in Decemeber before I tore it apart and never got a chance to wash it off.

Got my springs back, I'll have a pic of them on the shock tomorrow, aswell as the on the quad. Also got my skid plate back from Line X. Had them spray that GT Thunder skid I have with Line X to change the color and give it some more resiliance. Looks VERY good. The top side that's gunna be against the frame is smooth as glass so it doesn't rub and scratch the PC and the bottom is the rough texture they do the beds in. It's also really thick, before it was about 1/8" thick, now with the liner on it's 3/8", but it's still really flexible. Should work perfect, I deff. recommend doing this if you have a poly skid plate and want a little more protection on it.

Alright, she's done. Had a problem getting the crossovers to go inside the springs with the PC on them but after a little dremel action and some persuasion with a vise and a hammer they went on. The springs brought the whole front end together, that last bit of red made it just right. The skid plate also went right on and fit perfect after I driled the bolt holes out. Looks amazing, I can't believe other people haven't tried it. The liner is thick enough to keep it nice and snug so it doesn't move or rattle but it's not a pain getting it on. Also since the liner is somewhat pliable the bolts heads countersunk themselves into the skid so they don't stick out and get caught on anything, very cool. And it's gunna be tough as nails and last forever, very happy.

So I think I'm officially done with the 400. I can't really even think of anything else I want other than a Houser swinger (that I don't really need :p )and doing a 450 brake swap up front, but I really don't feel I need that either, SS lines are enough for me. I will be building the engine up more and possibly PC it aswell, but that is way in the future when this build finally blows, and I don't ride that hard so that won't be anytime soon. I'll post a few more shots of it sometime later when I get it all cleaned up so you guys can see what it looks like overall. Thanks for all the comments and help guys, couldn't have done it without ya!

Lol, now that you mention it I may get some. Now that I got the 450 I think I'm gunna use it for freestyle and make my 400 strictly a trail quad. I'll prolly get a set of Powermadd's even though you're not a fan of them. They'd match perfect and I like the looks of them over the others. I'll be sure to post a few pics if/when I get them.

Does anyone know if the Powermadd wrap around piece will work with ODI lock-on grips? Also I think I may need the Tri-mount kit also because I have no room on my bars at all, but then again it only works for 7/8" bars, and I have 1 1/8" bars. So I may not even be able to get them to work at all.:ermm:

Stickman, the quad looks great and I love the red/black color scheme. Also, what a nice looking garage/shop to work in! Is that yours or your parents? Sorry no offense but I am fairly new and don't know the age of most of you guys.

It's my dads. We farm so he has a HUGE Morton building that he keeps the machinery in and then he sectioned off one part of it and made it into a nice heated shop to work on everything in. It's very nice to have a big heated shop with a level concrete floor and all the tools and machines right there to work on a quad with, or my truck. Thanks for the coment on the 400, I'm very proud of it, deff. the best 400 anywhere around where I live.

Don't wanna hijack this thread or anything but I never see much on the 450! How is that thing doing?

Stickman400
01-22-2013, 10:35 PM
I can post a couple of it in here if you guys want. It's still sitting on the back burner. I still ride it quite a bit when the 400 doesn't satisfy my need for speed......or power, lol. I just got my new needle bearings and stuff today to get the swingarm back together since I PC'd it black along with all the other parts I just did for the 400. It may be back on the ground this weekend if everything works and fits back together.

I was planning on rebuilding the engine for it this winter since it's still on the same piston from the factory but I didn't manage to save any of the $1000 for the Sparks 500 kit between the 400 and christmas gifts. And now I'm trying to save up to buy a new full size truck so it may have to wait even longer. But as much as I ride it it should be fine. I only ride it in the local sand quarrys or MX tracks, which I don't ride in very often. I plan on buying a few odd and ends for it when I can but I'm not gunna do much to it since I won't ride it that much and it already has everything I need on it.

Stickman400
01-27-2013, 07:17 PM
Well I figured since Rohr mentioned it here I might aswell post a few pics of it in here. Got the swinger on and back on the ground on the 450. Didn't have too much trouble other than getting it in between the motor and frame. I like the way it turned out, I may have to add a couple little reds things on the back like maybe the caliper or a block off or something but it looks good the way it is, it's alot better than that mustard gold that it was.

What's up guys? Haven't been on here in quite awhile other than just poking around viewing a few posts every now and then. My laptops hard drive crashed back in the beginning of february if I remember right so I haven't ever been abe to get on the internet unless I'm on my phone or my xbox. Hopefully I'll get that thing fixed soon so I can get on here alittle more often again, I'm going insane not being able to just browse the web with a mouse and keyboad on a normal screen.

Anyway I did get around to finally getting some Powermadd handguards for the 400. I remember a few people on here said that I should have got some but I didn't like/need them. Well after I put them on I notice they help more than I woulda thought. They make it so you never have to take your hand off the bars for a low tree branch or mud built up on your grips or any of that annoying stuff. And since I'm making the 400 my dedicated trail machine it just made sense, deff. glad I took your guys advice on that one. Anway I've got a few pics of them back when i installed them back in february, I also took a pic with HIDs on since I don't remember posting any pics of them. Enjoy.

It had so much mud on it I ended up blasting the stickers on the back fenders off and breaking one of those plastic warning label covers and blasting the red stickers off that were underneath. So I had to take 2 of them off.

Anyway that's about all that has happened since I started rding this year, just little stuff that annoys ya. I'm pretty much done doing anything else to the 400 until the engine blows again. I've looked through motosport and rocky mountains sites and couldn't even find somethng I didn't already have or anything I wanted, and that's a first.

Well sorry for the essay but I just wanted to let you guys know what I've been up to and that I wasn't dead. I also bought a new truck but I'm gunna post that over in the open forum if you guys wanna check that out. Later

That is a great looking 400. I've used this thread for ideas on alot of my build. What do you think about those RAZR 2's on the back? I keep reading about how there tough to slide, but I wanted a first had account. What size are you running 22" front 20" back. Thanks

Stickman400
04-06-2013, 10:04 PM
Thanks, Im running 21 fronts and 20 rears like most gncc guys run. With the motor modded like I do I dont have a problem getting those Razr 2s to break loose and slide unless Im in really tacky clay or something similar, and they are nearly brand new tires with really straight edges to the tread still, so they do grab hard in a straight line.

You do have to make it slide though if you want it to, they wont slide naturally at normal speeds, I think thats what most people talk about when they say they wont slide. Which is exactly what I want, I want a tire that will grab everywhere unless I want it to slide, in which case I just give 'er a little throttle and maybe feather the clutch and it kicks the *** right out.

EDIT: I will say that my weight has a big effect on it too. I only weight 145 with full gear on and soaking wet so there isnt much weight over the back wheels to begin with. So Im sure that helps alot when I want to slide it around.
