Here's some pictures of Logan's CanAm Mod for the 2012 season.
In the pictures it's about 99% finished. Should have her running and riding it by this weekend. :D

Story of my life! -- I got a little TOO excited and shot (pictures) before it was ready.........lol.

I got A chain on her now, just gotta put a tentioner on it and she's ready to roll.

275ish ! Check that scale Rock.I would be shocked if it is under 300.

Funny you mention it when you did Don. I just weighed it on a CERTIFIED scale, with 2 gallons of gas (17lbs), 1 gallon of coolant (8.5lbs), and heavy DWT beadlocks, and it was 310lbs.....
I know the "others" have A claimed weight but I'd like to see their's weighed on a certified scale....
1st thing I'm doing is switching to a rolled lip rear rim....

That is pretty light for a full size 450 chassis,a JB is about the same weight (wet)according to Hetrick.Do you think you can shave a couple more lbs somewhere ?

Logan #34's Dad
12-11-2011, 07:00 PM
Mr. H and I are talking about that as I type. Lol. Beadlocks are definitely gonna go - about 10lbs there.... Rich, has some more ideas too... He MAY have some inside info...
I rode her for the 1st time today. Seems real strong and handles real nice. Gearing can sure be lower - shifts out early - got a six speed too. :D

Rocky, i'm curious what type of scale you used. you say it's certified but what is the max capacity of it? is max limit in the hundreds of lbs or thousands of lbs? also, is it the old mechanical beam type or the newer electronic load cell type. on the older mechanical beam type scale even if certified your weights can differ + or - 20lbs. just by moving the weighed object to a different area of the scale platform.
for example, if you used say a portable truck scale like used by state troopers the margine of error to be certified is based off of weights in the thousands of lbs. and is not realy acurate on something that light. a slight breeze can actualy alter the weight considerbly if using them outside.
to put it in perspective, on a recent doctors visit i weighed in at 245lbs. i just stepped off a certified scale and it has me at 280. the only real difference is this morning i'm wearing a jacket, its a nice jacket but i dont think it's 35 lbs. the certified scale i used this morning is rated for 120,000lbs.

Hey Jake 55,perhaps a cup of coffee and a long trip to restroom, take off jacket and you should be down to your 245 !!!

a very wise man from north western pa told me when i first got into this racing game to listen and learn anytime you get around that Bassani guy. so..... with that being said i tried your recomendations and the results were different, i scaled in at 260lbs. that's the point i am trying to make about scales. unfortunatly i'm very familer with the type of scale rocky has access to and they can be very touchy so to speak when dealing with such light weights. hopefully Rock chimes in here and tells us what the load ratings were on his scale. that quad could very easily be up to 20lbs or so lighter even though he used a certified scale.

I hope your right Rob - on the scale being off.... I did not use the heavy duty truck scale.
The one I used is the one our city recycling waste division used to weigh the full plastic crates. It has a metal platform about 60inches across by 60inches wide and before someone weighs something it gets zero'd out. The digital readout looked very similar to a wrestling type scale and went up in half pound increments. It resembles a large wrestling scale. It also had the certification sticker on it from the state....
I stood the quad up on its tail and it sat on the grab-bar.
I stood on it and I'd say it was very very close. If I'd have done the coffee trick maybe It'd made me feel a lil better....lol.
Truly I believe it was spot on..... I've got a friend with a Robert's and another with a JB, I'm going to see if I can get them to bring them to weigh them so I can compare apples to apples.
The trx125 weighed 290.....

jake55
12-12-2011, 11:11 AM
Ok, with that type of scale you are going to be spot on. i was thinking maybe you "borrowed" the portable ones in the silver van with the pretty flashing lights on top.

Logan #34's Dad

I'm hoping to get to weigh my buddy's quads on the same scale. Everyone "claims" a weight BUT that all depends on what is on and in the machine at the time they weigh it. The JB's and Robert's have a peanut tank that don't even hold a gallon of gas. One gallon of fluid is over 8lbs. Then there is tire and rim selection - I could put snowhogs on cheap thin rims - SO many factors go into the final outcome. Liquid is a big one - the stock CanAm radiator holds around or over a gallon of fluid and the tank can hold over 3 gallons. - that can be 32 pounds right there - just in fluids.
Anybody need a good set of DWT beadlocks?????

I actually did the most research on engine choice. I spoke to a lot of dirtbike people and was swayed to the KTM powerplant. I'll be on an island with the engine as far as people having extra parts to barrow but with good ole' ebay, I should have almost everything I need. I'm building a battle-box now. My main reason for the KTM was that I do not have to send an 85cc out to an engine builder to make a 105cc out of it. KTM took care of that for me..... :D.
Truth be told, I may have went with a KTM atv roller too. They are very light as well (chromoly frame).
When I added up the cost I'll have in this compared to buying a JB or Robert's, I'm WAY ahead plus I was able to buy things as my budget allowed. Not the lump sum.
The other thing I considered is IF Logan starts growing and getting taller, he'll fit right into this chasis and then when he's ready to make the step up to the 450's he'll be more comfortable on one.
I think it'd been real cool to throw a Honda 150 on her but then I'd only been able to use it for one class.....

It will be a switch for us trying to locate him on the track. I liked the green because it was easy to spot him.
The green was not very lucky for Logan so hopefully the Yellow will turn that around.

Well Boys, I put her on a diet and got it down to 284........
The stinking nerf bars that were on it were made of steel!!!!

Got our Fox Evols back from Fox with the upgrade and rebuild. Time to get to some indoors to practice.......

Very nice. Love to see more of these builds and very impressed with getting the weight down. I have now seen a YFZ and TRX 450 and 400ex based mods and now this Canondale. Much better suspension platform than the commonly used Blaster. This would make a very easy move to a 450 also as you already will have allot of the suspension already which can be the expensive part of any build. Not a fan of the 300ex, engines are too heavy (about 100llbs as one of the heaviest out there even compared to a 450 motor which can be 25llbs lighter) and weight can be a factor when having a young teen handle a heavy machine like the 300ex. To me this was a very smart and well thought out decision. I would love to see the mod classes/ supermini classes grow and these are the ideas that will help. Great job.

I'm not sure yet on the motor because I've not got anything to compare it to just yet. I guess we'll see at turn one eh? I'm leaving the engine stock until he needs more - gotta lot to learn.

Yes sir we were. Logan only got to run the Mod in one race though. He crashed his other quad in moto #2 and we went home. Logan was the kid on the quad with the brite yellow frame and rim rings.

He was running the Honda in the 90 Auto class, on the first lap in the far corner above the pond the stinking track lights went out and the rider in front of Logan jumped the camelback then slammed on his brakes, Logan jumped and plowed into the back of that rider. He flipped - bending the steering stem.
By the time he got going the leaders were heading toward the finish line. He managed to pass back up to second place though....:p
He bonked his head and was not feeling well so we left.
