valves?

I have an 04 Z400. I bought it this spring from the original owner. It sounds like a Singer Sewing machine. I was wondering if its the valves needing adjusted. If so how do I go about it. Any help would be appreciated. I have also been told that the timing chain could be loose.

The timing chain tensioners are known for going bad on those. I would recommend a manual chain tensioner -

The valves could also need adjustment like you said. If you have any mechanical skills it is not a huge deal. A clymers manual gives you step by step instructions with pictures and makes it very easy.

have owned 3 of them and most likely the valves need adjusted and put a timing chain in it.
they stretch horribly and make it sound like you dropped a penny in the motor lol

the manual tensioner works very well too.
we use them on the one Z that we still have
