hey guys i just wanted to let you know about the project that a friend and i are tackling for his son. I happened to come across a 1998 pro-trax 300 rolling chassis that had been sitting in a shop for about 4 or 5 years collecting dust. He was able to pick it up for a pretty decent price and since then has purchased a 2007 crf 250r to graft into this roller. We started about a week ago with it and it has started out pretty well. There is a bunch of work to get done as the crf engine has a left side intake so there is some shifting to do, rad to install, flip top to make as well as cleaning and stripping all the excess that was originally put on for the 350x engine. The plan is to have the front plastic be removed by push and lock pins as we have quit a bit of influence from a machine shop that builds drag cars. A rad from a trx 450r is the plan so we can utilize a fan that we will try and use a nicad battery out of an rc car to get us through 10 min plus a lap (the battery type is just a thought right now as the rad and fan have not come in yet) I have high hopes for this project in the handling and power department while still being the size and bodywork of a 300 ex. I will try and post pics here soon.

Did your friend get the roller from a guy that lives in Ohio?

I am located about 2 hrs east of toronto, no the chassis we were able to find here in ontario, a friend of mine owned it and left the country for business, sold it to a guy that had it for the 4 years and never did anything with it, the quad was in maine previous to that, and i believe Dave from drt motorsports owned it once upon a time. Would anyone know or could maybe take an educated guess at how many of the pro trax 300's were made? I am just curious, they seem fairly rare.

I know a guy in FL that has, or did have, a full Laeger 300EX. He had told me one time that it one of only a few made that used the 300EX bodywork, and most of them were set up for 250R plastic? I don't really remember 100% what all the details were. He was trying to sell it at one time, don't know if he ever did.

Seems to be a few of us from Ontario, Canada on here.

Definitely want to see pics of this build. Should be sick.

So I'm guessing Kingston-Belleville area?

I'm just down the river in Cornwall, where do you ride?

I have some good friends who reside in cornwall that ride as well. as far as riding I dont do too much of, just race on the weekends at a series called mmrs. The body work for that 300 is going to be the newer style maier that retro fits on to the old style '06 and earlier chassis. The challenge that we are facing right now is the back bottom frail rail where the pro peg goes is kind of a mess and we will probably have to replace that part of it. sorry i am horrible with remembering pics and stuff.

if you look in the second picture at the rear frame rail some hack thought it would be ok to remove a bunch of material for some reason during this frames existence, this is next on the list of things to correct. We removed the weld that holds the pro peg on and drove them out, next we will make a jig to secure the frame rails and remove whats left of the rear frame rail and install a new piece and put a new pro peg tube back in, we also made a jig for the linkage mount and removed it to re postion the linkage set up as well (for the crf intake) The swing arm has been cut and we modified the stock trx 250r spacers and seal collars to accept a linkage bearing out of a cr 500 for the left side pivot as it was slightly shorter in length for clearance. The right side uses a stock 250r swingarm bearing. Its going to be a slow process as we can only find time on the weekends to work on it.

Cool project frame, If history serves me right. I would say that someone tried to put a 350x motor in it. I remember people making that same cut on the rear tube to put those in the 250r frame..

was this bike once owned by Dave Therien ?

9matt2
12-16-2011, 06:52 AM
yes sr. mr Therien did own the bike way back when, i talked to him about it at a new england race this fall, he seems to be a super nice guy. The bike had passed through a few hands since his. I figured that cut out was for a bigger engine but i wasnt sure if the 350x took up that much more room.

Thats cool I remember racing against that bike lol
It had a 350X engine in it that was bored and stroked to the max
Cool chassis you don't see many like that

9matt2
12-22-2011, 07:09 AM
we just have the plastic sitting on the bike for right now as we are just looking for spots to put the zeuss clips, this is the 450r rad with the slightly modified 250r shrouds, i think it turned out pretty good.

9matt2
12-22-2011, 07:15 AM
side view, any suggestions on where i should put the coolant bottle, right now it is tacked on the left front frame tube but i was thinking of putting it at the back like the stock 250r location, the rad shrouds are not heavy enough to support it like the walsh set ups.

9matt2
12-22-2011, 07:31 AM
here is the rad mount stand offs, lower rad support brackets and the rear linkage. Since we did not want to cut the complete back out what we did was cut out the bad section and used the existing tube that was left as an alignment to run the pro peg through that was turned down to run a .005" clearance fit so it would stay aligned when it was being welded. In between the frame rails we installed a tube that had a bit thicker wall thickness to lessen the gap of the missing material removed when taking the linkage off the frame originally. Next we are on to the engine

12-22-2011, 10:45 PM
we removed the oem steel inserts and i machined some aluminium ones to work with the smaller diameter try swing arm bolt and proper shoulder spacing for chain alignment, heres the left one.

9matt2
12-24-2011, 09:34 AM
front motor mounts, i didnt want to cut the motor mount on the frame thats why i went on the outside of the left motor mount, its pretty much a straight on attach this way.

9matt2
12-24-2011, 09:40 AM
heres the spacers for the swingarm alignment, they are shouldered and lightly press into the back of the engine after tapping out the oem steel inserts.

9matt2
12-24-2011, 09:47 AM
we profiled trenches into the back of the subframe so the flip top rails will lay in the subframe when the seat is down, by doing this we are down a bit more than 1/2"

9matt2
12-24-2011, 10:13 AM
so now the swingarm mount and front mounts are done we are going to take everything off but the engine and turn the chassis upside down to do up the bottom frame rails and mounts. Yesterday i tested a 12 volt lithium ion battery out of a handrill and it powered the fan for 40 min before shutting off (as these batteries will not slow down the load they just shut off when drained) The fan spins at the same speed as if hooked up to a 12volt lead acid battery but this battery is about half the size of a brake caliper and weighs hardly anything at all, so i think we are going with this to power the fan.

so the frame has been sent to get blasted and then a final check before some color is added, this is the cross memeber that we put in to replace the one that was removed since everything had to shift to the left the 4130 was bent asymetrical so the shock will clear at full extension.

Jimmy @ T&T has all the Laegers except the LT500. 250R CRF450 YZ450 Banshee Suzuki LT250 300EX all are just a showpiece. Chromed out and pretty. I give him shyte all the time for letting them sit.

9matt2
01-17-2012, 08:42 AM
that would be quite the collection to see. i have always wanted to ride a leager banshee just to see what it was like. This one was in rough enough shape when we got it that i wasnt to concearned about putting a different engine in it. My brother and i both have a set of pro trax 250r's and his was actually one of dentons old weapons, as far as a leager crf, nope they are just too rare but i have a walsh crf and am happy with it.

so we were able to get the bike on the ground this past weekend, wanted to make sure everything fit and we didnt need to add or cut anything after being painted, still a few spacers to make and an extension for the kicker but thats about it.

9matt2

just have an old ratty seat laying around for mock up as well as some nerfs, just to get a feel for the height of thepegs/shifter/brake pedal.

01-25-2012, 10:36 AM
so the exhaust that we are using is a stock crf header with a spring tab welded onto the midpipe with a tc midsection and can with a closed endcap as we get sound tested at our series.

9matt2
01-25-2012, 10:40 AM
so heres the flip top with some fender brackets on it, my pet peve on a quad is floppy fenders so this solids them up a bit, fronts come off in about 15 seconds, i am suprised at how solid the dzeuss clips hold on.

9matt2
01-25-2012, 10:45 AM
we still are going to be cleaning up everything, like plastic, exhaust, suspension is all redone, motor is all gone through, fcr carb adaptor is done, we have a water pump cover being made to redirect the spigot to the rad. so here is the question, we are undecided on electric blue for the frame or crf red, what do you think?

9matt2

the exhaust is being ceramic coated and wrapped where the heat may burn the boot. the leager 300's are just like the oem 300ex for exhaust placement, on the right side of the frame.

ok so the project was kind of put on the back burner for a bit since racing season got underway but we were able to get it out last week and took it to the track to be raced last weekend, i rode it for practice and was thinking about racing it in my class just for fun but the kids that the bike was built for took it for a ride and well i got the boot, i dont blame them, it handles so good and is such a blast to ride, all you do is hold it to the bar and steer. we kept the engine stock as it seems to have quite a bit of jam to it, and it runs on pumpfuel which is sweet. carburetion had to be changed a little and we settled on 12/39 gearing, i am super happy wit how it turned out and the kids that it was built for seem to like it too. sounds pretty neat too.
