idling around in 2nd gear or 3rd i hit the gas and it dies right down, ive tried main jets from 175 all the way to 200 with no change. when i tried the 185 main i had some backfire. i think i need to richen the needle up and see how that goes. am i headed in the right direction? it has a 200 in it now for a main.

More info about the bike is needed, but to me it sounds like you may have an air leak as a 200 main is VERY high!

11:1 compression, port and polish, stage 1 hotcam. Full big gun pipe. 450r carb. K&n filter. 200 main, needle 2nd or third from the top. But I believe it's at the 3rd

Ok 450r carb makes more sense then with the jetting. Chances are your too rich still and may have an air leak. You need the adapter pipe that forum member ZR Pilot makes if you cant get it to seal right around the carb boot (typical problem). Your boot from the carb to the head could also be cracked causing problems as well. You also need to block off the hotstart if you havent already.

Otherwise Id suggest air leak or too rich on the main-coincidentally both of which are related. Try removing the airbox lid, it goes away your too rich.

My buddies old 450R did the same thing, i dont remember the jetting specs, but he went down a couple sizes on the main jet and it quit.

His would bog for like 1 second, and then kick in and take off.

I pulled the lid and air filter out, I have the zr adaptor. Also the hotstart is blocked off, guess I'll check airboot

Pulling the air filter out will make it run worse, put it back on.

its back on , but it actually lessened the bog, or at east didnt make it worse

update, raised the needle (to the 5th slot down from the top, ) i know my main is too rich, removed the airbox lid rode it around and its closer. gonna drop the main back down to a 190, and see how that works. also sprayed starting fluid around intake hoses and the carb to see of there were any leaks, but idle never changed.
