I just splt the cases and found this spring laying in the bottom of the cases any idea where it might go?

Reminds me of the spring that goes clutch side cover where the clutch arm goes.

What year is the quad? Could it be the spring that goes on the reverse lever. I know they had a recall on my 05 with something about a spring.

But that spring would have stayed on the clutch side. He said he split the cases.

why did you split the case? maby the reason you split it is the problem.
