I have a 2003 400ex and i just replaced the carrier and after i put the axle and everything back together it moves left to right with about 1" of play in it. i don't remember having that before i replaced the carrier. everything is tight i don't know what is wrong. Any suggestions????

Your axle nuts tight, you put the c-clip back on right?

the c clip is on and the axle not is tight over it and the lock not is up against it.there are small gaps between my sprocket and brake rotor where the go into the carrier but i cant get them in any further into the carrier.

Welcome to the forums!

Yea ^^^ agree sounds like that clip isnt on

Axle nuts do come loose sometimes, especially right after you put them back together in which it sounds like you just did.

i did just put it back together but the clip is in the grove in the axle and i checked the nut and they are both tight

Which way did you snug the nut? it goes away from the axle, not towards.

Sorry i didnt see you responded to CJM until after i posted.

Did everything seem to line up good when you assembled it?

it seemed lined up to me the sprocket lined up fine but the axle not was a pain to get on far enough to get the clip into the grove but i couldnt get the brake rotor any further into the carrier. i even tried lightly beating it in with a mallet but i wasnt sure if i could mess up the carrier or not

are the axle splines are gummed up? Or do they look good?

they looked ok to me. ur refering to the groves that the brake calliper and nut slide into right?

does anybody know about the gaps i mentioned? if you look on the sprocket side of the carrier it seemes like theres a quater inch gap or so and on the brake rotor side its the same thing is that normall??when you buy a new carrier is there any seals or anything that you are sapose to take out before install?

yep, hm...

Idk CJM is better at this then me, i know they can be a pain to get on, if it was me i would smack it in place with a rubber mallet because it sounds like its just not going on far enough but i break alot of stuff so idk if i would listen to me or not haha

I have horrible luck and i would hate for you to do that and break something because of me.

But it sounds like its just not on far enough.

idk anything about this, But maybe if you could get pictures of the axel & gaps you are talking about on here they might be able to tell you whats wrong faster just a thought.

it sounds like to me you didnt tighten the nuts correctly.

The outer nut is the whole thing holding it together, the inner is just a lock nut.

You need to tightened that outer nut as much as you can towards the tire till its SNUG and then tighten the other nut against it.

Could there be a burr on the axle preventing it from sliding all the way in the inner race on sprocket side of the carrier?

maybe u didnt put the lock ring back in thr groove in the axel

sorry but i dont have anything i can use to take a picture with right now other wise i would show them to you. but the clip is in the groove and the not is tight over the clip with the lock nut right up against it but it was very difficult to get the clip on so maybe there could be a burr on the axle preventing it. i will check it and let you know. thanks everybody for the help. ill let you know if that fixes it

I had that same problem on mine one time, but that was just because I was trying to use a Durablue brake hub on a stock axle. If you are using the stock hub in a stock axle there is either crap built up on the inside of your hub, on your axle splines or your not tightening it right.

no everything is stock except for the new carrier. but im going to take it all back apart tomorrow after work and check the splines for burrs or anything built up in them.
