I've got a 440ex it is great exert it will randomly break clutch cables all the time, the clutch cable looks melted around the exhaust but not melted through. It usually breaks around the clutch perch. that's why I think it might be my clutch lever or clutch perch rubbing it until it breaks. What do you think?

are you running motion pro clutch cables? i have had two of them break at the perch. i have been running nothing but honda cables since then, however i did switch to an ASV lever.. can't remember if that was before or after the last break.

Yep they are motion pro. Do you think that is the reason? What kind should I get instead. I've been looking at those asv levers they are bad *** but im not sure what to get.

unless you're wanting to change to an ASV, just try getting an OEM honda cable. either a regular 400ex cable or a 92 250x cable so you can route it down the frame, instead of between the head pipes.

Don't know what year your machine is, but the 05-up 400ex clutch cables are a few inches longer than the 99-04. I use the newer ones on my older machine with both the stock handlebar setup and with a 2.5" riser.

So I don't need new clutch levers just different cables?

I had the same problem with the motion pro before I wrapped the header pipe to keep the heat down.

Now Ive switched to Magura hydro

i've just always used 1992 250x cables. i don't have any pictures on this computer, but you can run it in front of the stem and down the frame rail that the right side of the oil tank is bolted to. i zip tie mine down to the right side engine mount so it's right near the oil line going to the engine.
