You should make E4 within you're enlistment. Takes 18+ months with varibles. E5 do not need security clearance. SF ranger ect need that and some other high speed mos.

It purely depends on your MOS and what you will be doing that would call for you to obtain a security clearance.

Such as EOD (explosive Ordinance disposal) requires a TS SCI clearance.

They don't just hand out security clearances if you don't need one, obviously you understand that!! I don't believe that there is any certain security cleanerance requirement for any paygrade in the infantry... BUT as an MP i had to get one from the get go!!!

Yeah I had to get one as EOD as well. Its not difficult to get as long as you have a clean history and do not lie. Lots-o-paper work though!

Security clearance and the level of the clearance is dependent on your job and job local.

I got my first security clearance in my MOS school while I was in the USMC because we used crypto gear for training. There were (20) E1~E3 in my class and all of our clearances were either upgraded or downgraded after we reached our first duty assignments.

Area clearance and Secret are easy.
TS and TS SCI is were the silliness begins.

Unless you have something in your history that will prevent you from getting a clearance I wouldn't worry about it. Your unit will provide you with what is needed to apply for the clearance.
