I've got a 440ex it is great exert it will randomly break clutch cables all the time, the clutch cable looks melted around the exhaust but not melted through. It usually breaks around the clutch perch. that's why I think it might be my clutch lever or clutch perch rubbing it until it breaks. What do you think?

When your "all alone" in front of your computer, loosen your grip a little. your building up those hand muscles.
Anyhow, the cable could be hanging up in the melted spot and when you squeeze, the cable just breaks at its weakest point.

So is there any way to keep it off the exhaust?

I may be wrong but im pretty sure if you buy a 250x cable, it is a lot longer and you can route it down the frame instead of through the exhaust... I've done it like that on mine... Can't remember but im pretty sure its a 250x cable. Someone in the 400ex section would know...

Did you ever get it fixed? And how?

Used a few zip ties to pull it away from exhaust. Never fixed the snapping prob just always made sure to have a extra cable ready for when snap.
