Just curious what everyone's running on their moto 400's. Trying to get some new ideas to get an even bigger edge on the track. Also figured this would be a great way for everyone to help improve their 2012 setups.

well your going to have alot of mixed feeling on this cause nobody likes the same thing but... comon tires are normaly holshots or razrs , a arms are normaly +2's , shocks 450r revalved or a aftermarket brand, motors are gonna be diffrent as stated in the other thread it depends on what u want and can afford, +2 axle good bars good nerfs, kill switch tire pressure is key i run 6 rear and 10 front with beadlocks in the rear i run 3-4 psi.

Well what i did was +3+1 arms and PEP Zps front shocks and a TCS rebuilt rear shock with a stock swing arm and +4 lsr axel. +3 A-arms are what you want not +2 like every one thinks. You want +3 with 4/1 rims to be right under 50" which is for pro racing so every one trying to stay under 50" is kind of stupid no need to be under 50" at less your going to race nationals. For engine I got a yz426 engine out of a dirt bike and paid a normal welder $270 to mount the engine and what not. Was sick as hell and so fast. Went from almost stock 400ex to ready for pro racin in only few weeks. Engine swap/chassis mods only took 7 hours while many people think engine swap takes months.

For mx do not go 450r shocks go yfz450 shocks if your looking for cheep better shocks. I tested both yfz450 are better in every single way. 450r make you taller, hurt ball joints, and handle worse than yfz450s while yfz450 lower you a tiny bit but can lower you a lot if wanted from adj the pre load and just work way better than the 450r shocks. Every one just goes 450r because they think they need to use honda only parts which is stupid imo.

spastic, people dont buy 450R front shocks because they think you need to put honda parts on, people buy 450r shocks because every company that rebuilds shocks will tell you that 450r shocks are the best shocks there are to rebuild and if you buy 450r shocks 9/10 you are going to get them rebuilt rather than buy aftermarket.

However if they are going to leave them just stock 450 shocks on a 400 then yea, it sounds like you know what you are talking about with the yfz's being better than the 450r's

yfz stock shocks are a bit better setup for mx riding. They are softer and lower the front about an inch or so.

But the 450r shocks as cody mentioned are much preferred and able t be built up into whatever you want.

With the preload backed all the way off on my 450r shocks the quad sits fine and stresses nothing and rides plush enough for me.

Still yfz450 shocks better than 450r in every way for mx and fact. I tested and even tested bottoming points. For xc idk then 450r may be better. And no point in buying 450 shocks and paying to have them rebuilt because for the overall cost your better off getting a set of used aftermarket shocks.

I'll sell you an air box bracket for 40 shipped for 400ex.

You remove your air box and mount the bracket. DASA did a test on a 450 lid off vs no box and no box was a 2-3hp gain over just the lid off so up to 4hp gain by going from box to no box which is huge.

In pic you see the bracket and how the filter is. And mud/water/dust don't get to it much at all like people think when you hit mud the mud dont even go by the filter because of the location, a day of mud riding the filter only gets speckled with mud and ill throw in a $15 K&n water repellent filter skin with it for free. Pm if you want.

And also a stock XR400 cam can be used in a 400ex used they go for around $40 and are like a stage 1 hot cam. And a stock xr CDI/rev box is like an aftermarket rev boc to the 400ex.

Another mod is buy a non O ring chain. It's weird but you gain around 1hp by doing so.

Most builders will say that the 450r shocks are better quality than the EARLY yfz shocks.. More rebuild options.

If you're not going to do any work to them and ride them stock, then the yfz shocks are competative with the 450r fronts, but lower the front end.. I have YFZ fronts on my raptor and they work alright..

and I'd gladly lose 1hp for the reliability of an X-ring chain!

I like the idea of riding a non-o-ring chain.
They're cheaper and it's not a lot of money for the extra HP.

For everyday riding it wouldn't make much sense...
but in a competitive environment, everything counts.

(I don't race or anything, but it's easy to understand the logic)

I too see the logic, but I had a non O-ring chain on my 450 and it lasted a month before it was stretched/worn out. It was no big deal, but I really dont see the cost advantage over the good quality chain in the long run. The X-ring chain that replaced it is still good after 2-3 months of riding.

I understand what you're saying
The reason you can't see cost advantage is because there is none, It's strictly a HP advantage.
I'm sure when people race at a professional level, a chain becomes of those things you change every race, just to make sure it doesn't cause trouble.
I run a o-ring chain too, I'd rather pay a little bit more to have it last 2 or 3 times longer :)

i like to run my 400 with exactly 74 1/4in holes in the stock silencer. swap in a Raptor 898 motor (lower compression the better) along with a leaf blower as a turbo. dont forget the ITP mud lites on the back...................I think spastic is rubbin off on me guys....

The KFX shocks aren't too bad. Miles better than the stock ones, and I didn't need to have them rebuilt to feel comfortable.
I mostly to trail riding so I didn't need top performance. They never bottom out and work very good with the +2 a-arms.
