what is the best way to remove and install a crank in an 04, with out a press?

You need a crank puller to properly get the crank in without any damage to it. The only other way that may work is to heat the inner race of the bearing enough for the crank to drop in. The bearing must be hot, and it wouldn't hurt to chill the crank. You do stand the risk of everything tightening up and the crank sticking before if seats, if you don't have the temp right. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES HIT THE CRANK WITH ANYTHING.

I will second this! Check out RMATV, they make some nice tools that will pull and press the crank out.
