View Full Version : 450r Fox float R shocks on 400ex

I found some fox float r shocks for a great price but they are off a 450r. Anyone know much about these and if they would work okay on the 400ex? I would think with being adjustable air shocks you could adjust them to work fine on the 400ex?
Any opinions out there? I don't know a ton about the Atv Fox shocks.
Should be ok, just make sure they are stock length and not long travel. If they are long travel they will not fit without the proper length a-arms.

as long as they are not longtravel they can work. however yes they are air shocks but they still have to have the correct stroke. the stroke is the distance from max travel of the shocks. so measure the max travel in the front. then measure the distance fully compressed. so bottom out height center to center from aarm to shock mount. take the max travel minus the bottom out length and you will get the stroke of the shock.

I was talking to the guy selling these shocks and he has some 450r shocks revalved and with triple rate springs for a really fair price too. The shocks are setup and valves for 170#, I weigh probably closer to 200 with all my gear on. Do you think the revalved resprung stock shocks would be a better choice?
You weigh to much for those shocks.

Even though they are setup for a 450r mxer? I guess my logic wasn't working, figured if the stock 450 shocks are stiff, then some setup for a slightly lower weight would be good. Take it that's not the case and that maybe the stock 450 shocks aren't stiff and tall? I weigh 180 and figure gear and camelback puts me around 195.
The thing about shocks and specially ones setup for people is they are set up specifically for riding style (mx, xc, etc) and for weight. Once you get over about 180lbs triple rates also are very hard to set up and dial in.
It would be best to buy a set of used 450r shocks and set them up for yourself. Id contact Colby at C&D Racing, GT Thunder or Nick at Jet suspension and speak to them and see what they say.

You se probably right, there is a lot more.to shock setup than I initially was thinking. The shocks were reworked by gt thunder so I will try to talk with them and get their thoughts.

Turns out they are just the dual rate springs. He has a triple rate rear shock. Still waiting to see what gt thunder thinks about any valving changes they may have made.

Talked to Nick at Jet, talk about a great guy. Would highly recommend him to anyone needing suspension work.
He seems to think the shocks will work good and when I send.them in for service he can make the minor adjustments it needs.

Well, I got an email back from gt thunder and.they say the shocks will be too long and too stiff. So, I am thinking its too much risk I will just keep watching for some stock 450's to have built up.
450r shocks are to long for an EX by maybe a half an inch, its not a big deal. Not sure how stiff they will be for you, stock they are quite stiff.

The revalved and resprung 450r shocks would be fine. You will notice a HUGE gain over stock, even if they werent set up for a different weight.
