How does payout work?

So if there were say ten riders and the entry was 50 bucks. and 50% payback. who would get how much money and how do you figure. I just dont understand how any of the payback works.

That would mean there is $250 total purse divided into top half or third of class....depends on track. The percent is the percentage of miney paid back. Ten riders at $50 ea is $500x50%= 250

Since some purses are 250% pay out, they have to get the money from somewhere.
I would think that some tracks use a percentage of all entries from all classes to put into a purse in order to make a decent payout for the pro class.
