The oddest carb problem this site has seen! ^

Where the gas is leaking out looks like it's missing a piece.
The spot to the right looks how both of them should I believe.
I would say it's bogging because ur fuel is going out that hole rather that into the head.

you can see what I mean in the attached picture (from the service manual)

its hard to tell from the video but it looks like that little brass ball in the service manual pic might be missing?

thanks

I have a feeling your going to be buying an entire carb for that one little piece. its the kinda part that is integral to the carb and not separate I think.

yeah, you should be able to pick up a used 400ex carb on eBay for around $50 maybe less..thats probably your best route.

:-(
that's what I was afraid of.
think I should go for the 450 carb? is it worth it? Basically stock 400 motor wise

Its worth it if you can find one for a good price. It adds power, very noticeable. Id also do an exhaust and a sparks key while your at it and maybe a stage 1 hotcam. Will be like a whole new bike.

it has an FMF and a K&N, but what's a spark key? only 04-05 450 carbs fit right?

Sparks key is a timing advance key. The 400ex has a slightly retarded ignition setup. Put the advance key in the flywheel and it advances timing 6 degrees and makes a bit more pep. Its only recommended for quads with 10:1 comp ratio or less.

Yes, only a 04-05 carb fits easily. Others will fit like an FCR but require more work and are harder to adjust.

Just seal it up with some seal all. IMO no need to buy a whole new carb because of that. That is weird though. Wonder how it came out??

Trust me when I say this: No matter what sealant you put on there it will get eaten by gas. The only real way to seal it is to braze it closed or weld it shut. Since tig welding such an area is very hard, brazing and or soldering it shut would be best. Problem comes then with heating up the carb to much possibly when brazing and or soldering.

Might be worth it to just try and take a screw, tap some threads into there and throw some rtv gasket maker in the hole and on the screw-but no guarantees it wont leak.

I thought the tap some threads in there also. That would be way better.

can i solder it with an electrical soldering gun?
probably not huh?

Pencil torch might work since its small enough to get in there. The big Q is can you heat it up...IDK.

Whats possible is to tap some threads in there for a machine screw then fill the sucker with RTV and see what happens. Easier than brazing/soldering it shut.

after closely examining the carb, any brazing or inserting of a screw will block where the fuel is coming up. :(
so Baileygunns chimed in and is shipping me a carb tomorrow morning :-D
big thanks to him and the rest of you for your excellent input/ideas
