Though they may look as shinny as chrome, their not. Bolts from Honda and most atv/motorcycle manufacturers come zinc plated. But over the years they will eventually darken and look real tarnished. The bolts Dustin sent have been run thru an acid wash that removes the original zinc and all the discoloration and then they are re-zinced and come out looking brand new!!

Hey Marc how the hell you been buddy! No, I no longer have my National 250R, the LRD aluminum framed bike with the LRD 350PV, but I sure wish I still had it! I found some old pics recently and forgot how dang nice that quad was, probably one of my best rides ever! I'm currently restoring two 89's back to all original and I have a 3rd project on the back burner, a complete aftermarket bike!!

Central Kentucky Processing (CKP) in Lexington, Ky. it is their Plating Division at 2580 Palumbo Dr. They are a large processing facility that coats thousands of daily production parts, automotive pieces, etc... So the bolt thing is just something they will do for people, on the side type deal. They have a minimum zinc coating charge of $100, so basically you can box up all your nuts and bolts, brackets, clamps, etc.. and get them recoated for $100!! You can easily send the equivilent of 2 quads worth of bolts and get them done for that price! As you can see in the pics, Dustins bolts filled up a large USPS Flat Rate box which ships for $15 and is the size of a shoe box! Sam Dennis is the man to speak with at CKP, he manages the plating shop and runs the shipping/receiving office.

*Keep in mind you can ONLY send metal/steel bolts, nuts, brackets, etc... the acid wash tank that cleans the parts off will damage aluminum pieces!! If in doubt when gathering your parts, simply take a magnet and hold the part in question to it, if it sticks your safe!!

superman- I assumed they plated those with a bulk barrel process, but some of those bigger parts I would think they would have to indiviually hang. Did that fella mention how they did it?

The reason I ask is where I work we send parts that get a clear cad zinc plating with the bulk process. If your guy isn't hanging those, I might see if my parts can get done with our work stuff. We pay a $140 minimum at Lincoln Industries in Omaha, NE.

What is the thickness of the coating, and what affect does it have on the tolerances and fit of the nuts and bolts?

superman

DoonRider, yes its a bulk barrel process and most everything we have takin there has fit down in one of those barrel, but I did have 2 stock axles done and he hung them on a rack and sent thru.

wilkin250r- as I mentioned in my description they go thru an acid bath first that removes the original zinc and all the dingy tarnished look and then their re-zinced, so they end up back at factory specs. I've built 2 complete quads with no fit issues whatsoever.

Someone had asked how a brake rotor would turn out, so I did one! And I think it turned out real nice! Like I said it will zinc anything that is steel.

I just found a local guy here in north-central CT to do this... I'll report back for you East Coasters that are looking to get stuff done!! Hopefully they look as nice and clean as Superman's do!! I'm taking him a 5 gal. bucket full of nuts, bolts, washers, clamps, rotors, etc. and 2 rear axles.... VERY fair price! Fingers crossed that they come out nice!

I noticed you had a kickstart assembly done. Did you disassemble it and clean the grease out or did you sent complete. I'm just curious how well the acid cleans it.
Thanks!!

let me know about the CT guy :) def interested in this. Does it remove metal from the bolts, thus making them weaker?

Looks good - you had a big load.

I got mine back from Lincoln Industries out of Lincoln NE last week. I only had 50 to 60 pcs, but now I wish I would have sent more. They look better than some of the new OEM stuff I bought. As superman mentioned, it isn't chrome, but I noticed it can be buffed out with a little polish and look alot like chrome.

Good stuff.
