Question is how out dated would something like a fully built 2005 450r be compared to lets say the 2011 - 2012 models that are out there now for racing in something like A or AA classes on a local level race series? I've been out of racing for over 5 years now and I'm wondering how much the industry has changed?

Lol, an '05 Honda will look almost identicle to a '12 Honda..

Some prefer the 04/05 as a platform to build from.

NP.. there were a few engine changes, and a few suspension changes, but for the average person wouldn't be able to tell the difference if they had two different gernerations in front of them.. especially if they are both decked out..

I'm assuming when fully built like any high level racer would have their quad, there would be almost no advantage from one atv to the other then.

2006 and later have the option of electric start. They don't start well with one battery. But if you run a 24v system, they will be at the front of the pack. The front suspension also changed on them. Alot of people run 04/05 front ends on 06+, because of better geometry. It's a noticable difference. The 06+ come with an FCR carb. Some people don't like the snap that comes with this, so they switch to 04/05 carb.

I've owned two 04/05 models, and a 2007 e-start model. I loved the e-start, but it seemed like I had more mechanical issues with that year compared to my older ones. I've been out of the game myself for a couple years. When I do start racing again, you can bet I'll be on an older model.

For my XC quads, I'm going to be building off the 05 platform for as long as I can find good bikes to build. I've been toying with the idea of an MX play bike. If I do, it will more than likely be a newer model, or one of my retired race bikes with some different stuff done to it.

running an 05 at a couple local tracks and have beat some newer quads zukis, kawis, yamahas and several trx's on what some people call outdated equipment..iv beat some and iv been beat but mostly just comes down to bein comfortable and knowin what the machine will do..and in all honesty i stick with my 05 due to minimum wiring, not having to worry bout a battery, and what lil weight difference there is,some will argue you cant feel the difference but iv rode E-starts and can tell it in the air

Bone stock, the 04/05 has better handling and the 06+ has more power.

if your going to build a race motor, go with the 05...the transmission is wayy stronger then the 06+
