Does anyone have a picture of the 450R rear shock on the 400ex? I know its about an inch shorter, I feel it would give it a better stance for mx.

I had used the 04-05 swinger, linkage and shock, and I found it didn't work right. It did sit low, but I couldnt get the ride height set on it. It felt like a I was driving a hay wagon.. I put the 400ex shock back on it..

Damn thanks for the quck reply! Ya thats pretty much how I imagined it would sit. Do you jump it at all? How is it over decent size jumps and did you use the 400 or 450 linkage?

i have a stock 400 linkage, and i got it set really stiff so on the big jumps its not bad at all but the little ones kill me haha

My 400ex shock blew out some time ago, all I could find for a decent price was a 450r shock. It works rather well for me, but tends to bottom out on alot of stuff. For the price I paid it doesnt bother me really.

So basically the 400 one is better because the travel is longer? I'm gonna be running a a roll design front end setup, and I have a whole 450R rear setup so I just didn't know what kind of opinions everyone had.

I like to keep it as low as possible and be able to take some big jumps:D

they are about the same i think for ride wise, yes they do bottom out easier like pointed out above by CJM but it all depends on how you have them set up too.

I got mine for $40 on ebay and i actually bought it just to resale it but i threw it on one day and liked how it sat lower. But like i said mine is really stiff so i dont really have many problems bottoming out.

In all honesty you really shuld think about running a GT Thunder MX linkage and shock setup. You change the linkage so it puts the shock more vertical-which is the way it should be from honda. The linkage also lowers the quad to set up for 18" rear tires. Combined with the shock being redone for your weight and riding style it will ride super smooth. Its not cheap at about 400 bucks for the rear setup but it does work.

JET suspension is also another person who deals in the GTT setup, they will rework your shock as well.

Search alittle I think the 06-up is the one to get because the 06 swingarm is longer. I have seen some posts about this subject.

The 06+ swinger is longer, shock is longer and linkage/linkage mount on the swingarm are all different from the 04-05 setup.

It makes a significant difference when you're trying to race it. I found the 450r shock was too stiff for my application. and although I liked the way it sat it was much to stiff. I played with the different dogbones and links I had until I got something that worked decent, still not great, but decent.
My ultimate goal would be to get the 400ex gtt link and build the 400ex shock to work with it. But my ex is on the backburner for a while..

so how much shorter is the 450r shock compared to the 400ex shock? Im wanting to lower the rear end on my other 400ex and I can get a 450r stock shock cheaper than any lowering link.

04/05 Shock = 14 3/4
06+ Shock = 15 1/4
400ex Shock = 15 1/2
