I'm in the middle of replacing my clutch and don't have the hold tool. I never realized this before but my basket has some play

Is this a sign that the bearing behind the basket is worn or is this normal?

Also, the groves on the basket and inner piece (the name escapes me) are becoming obvious and can be felt with a finger. Is it time to replace the basket?

I think that's pretty normal.
Mine had some play in it as well when I was replacing the timing chain last week.

You dont need the holder tool.
If you can get a hold of an impact wrench and a 27mm socket, you can blast that center staked nut off.

The grooves can cause issues. If they're not too severe, I hear you can file them smooth, but if they're very noticeable, you should replace I would think.

Good luck.

Well I guess since I'm already in there and the inner clutch is like $50 at the dealer I'll replace that. However, the basket.. Jesus.. $250 for that. :-/ Rather not have issues on my 100 mile ride next month though.

I've never had a basket that looked as GOOD as yours does, keep running it. I've filed mine a few times, seems to wear them out even faster, but it's a temporary fix anyways. I always used an impact to get my baskets off too, easiest way to do it IMO.

Lol, I just had that same thought when I was putting mine together this morning after putting a new timing chain and guides on. It had a little play also, but it had it before I took it apart and it ran fine then. I also put an impact on the center nut, just remember to stake it when you get it tight and it wont come off. And your inner hub looks fine, keep using it unless you want to spend the money.

just as everyone else has stated,

just use an impact

The clutch basket really doesnt look all that bad i dont think. just my opinion to it.

Your basket doesn't look bad at all. My basket was way more grooved than yours. I replaced it and the pressure plate with a Hinson and I am still on the same clutch plates from when I installed the Hinson sometime around 2000 or so.

That basket and pressure plate has paid for itself several times over by now. Great stuff if you plan on upgrading to a new basket.

I just put a new clutch in mine... i didn't have to remove the staked nut.... just the 5 bolts with the springs.... unless you need to take the basket off...
