My 400EX stage 2 and stage 3 hotcam comparision

I recently picked up a stage 3 hotcam for cheap. I know its for a 460 stroker but i want to try it in my 440EX. I am very happy with my stage 2 cam but want to see what kind of difference there is. Im guessing a loss on bottom end but an increase on top end.This morning i did some distance to distance radar runs and recorded my results. I just swapped in the stage 3 tonight and am going to run her tomorow and see what kind of difference there is or if i even like it. Who knows i might be putting the stage 2 back in! Ill post my results here tomorow.

That sounds cool, an we should get some good info either way...let us know how things worked out....try some hill climbing an stuff to...put it to the test while its in there!!!

If you can give us a lil info on your motor,,,,like what all has been done,,,, carb,pipe,p&p head,10.1.1 to 13.1.1 comp.....so when all can get a lil compearing going ......thanks

I have the stg3, it is def a bottom end loss over a stock cam.. The stg 2 prob would be my choice if I did it again, but again, I can stomp piped, jetted, filtered 400's like nothing... Even beat on 450's so, maybe it is a diff, but the mid and top end make up for it... Seems it def likes to rev with the old 3 in there..

Ok i tried it out today. Didnt get to test it against the radar gun.But i did notice a gain on top and no low end loss compared to the stage 2.

My list of mods:
440 11 to 1 wiseco piston
Janssen ported head
+1mm kibblewhite valves
White bros revbox
Lrd header,custom modified Jardine big core muffler
41mm sudco FCR
Velocity air filter
185 main jet
Race gas
Stage 3 hotcam

It goes! It can beat my 450r with a cam and full system!!!!!!!

So your saying the 440 with the stg 3 out runs your piped and cam'd 450??

Im sure the rest of the mods are helping quite a bi to beat that 450r.

Agreed, head work and all, but the 1mm over valves are not making huge diff.. That engine would have to make 45 hp or so.. I want to race a cam'd 450 now LOL.. Going riding tom, so gona try out my biddies 09 piped, jetted,filtered 450..

John BTW my 450r is a 05, i couldnt beat a 06 and newer with these mod though.

when i say beat it i mean barely. 450r bumper to my grab bar. I am going to put a bigger carb on my 450r next then the ex will be left in the dust. Im telling you guys the biggest improvement i have done to the ex is the 41MM Sudco FCR. It is amazing!

i had that stage 3 hotcam in my old 440. i liked it, however i never rode an ex with a stage 2 to compare.

Well today i had a scare. I was riding and heard a loud ticking. I immediatly shut it off and had it towed back to my truck. I was thinking maybe the valves smacked the piston or? . I tore it apart when i got home and the stupid cam chain tensioner took a crap ( it was collapsed) I checked the valves and it didnt jump timing so everything should be good. Seeing as is the fourth time ive seen these things fail. The first time on my own quad though. Im thinking about getting one of those manual tensioners now. Im just lucky it didnt wreck anything else.
