course, specially since you bought a kicker. I had a kicker atv once, its fun if you stall out somewhere in a bad spot..you will know what I mean when it happens.

If your jetting isn't absolutely perfect, you're gunna have one beefy right leg by the time you get it started

Also if you're going up or down or along the side of a decently steep hill and it stalls, you just have to roll back to the bottom or bail off and let it flip. I know it doesn't happen often but my friend had that happen a couple times on his 450 while trail riding. They can be really annoying if you get in an awkward position and it stalls.

Just to be clear, I'm not knocking the kicker at all, I'm just saying, it takes a little extra to get used to. It seems like every time I get my hybrid to start easy, I do something else to the motor and have to start completely over

kickers nice 05's are tractors power comes on too slow. different cam, comp, and porting than the bike. 06 and up has the better motor. nice i guess  i'd of kept the ex:p

i would NEVER buy an e start 450r. My 05 has a cam and pipe and starts with ease. Even when hot. Ive only used the hot start maybe once at a track. You get used to it. They do take a bit of force to kick, but its not bad.

there is nothin at all wrong with a 05 kicker, the 06 and up was said to have a worse carb and tranny on them.

Yes they did bump up the compression and build the motors with a lot more power but nothing is bad about trading a 400ex for a 450r.

Resale value you are lucky to get $2000 out of a 400ex and a 450r will go all day for $2800 where i am at.

^^thank you cody!!! and atvkid
the 450r is worth way more better to race and not to metion this one has motor work full exaust gforce axle and all kinds of crap. but like i say im still gonna miss the old 400 :( if i see it on craigslist cheap enough id probley have to buy it back :D

What I meant by enjoy kicking it, was if you find yourself in a precarious situation where your stuck and cant really get off you must now either roll down and maybe push start it on the way down or get off and hope you dont fall.

Ex: While riding once I went over a large hill and as I crested it I stalled for whatever reason. There was no getting off, was no rolling down easy, etc. Without electric start I woulda been watching it fall down the hill

Congrats on the new bike! Once you're used to the kicker you'll be alright.. its more about technique than it is about force. I can kick mine over even when i'm sitting.

I'd get that head looked at properly too. Get a P&P while you have it off.. unless those bolts will turn out easy

Oh i deff agree that its easier to push a button rather then have to hold the brake, flip out the kicker, try to kick it (probably a few time) but i heard that 450ER's have trouble starting when its hot. Like there was a video on youtube i watched of this kid that killed it on the 2nd lap of a race and it wouldnt start back up. ?? Idk that may be due to other reasons but all the comments said that the 450ER (unless you have the dual battery) is a real pain to get started once hot.

I wasnt really responding to previous comments on here i was just saying he got a good deal and stating my opinion. :)

I think the '06s did because it was the first year with a battery. My friend had one and it constantly gave him fits and wouldn't start. He HAD to check his valves almost daily becuase if they were slightly off it wouldn't start, it would just crank over forever like it wasn't getting spark or gas. He could rarely just hop on it and go, there was always something that needed checked before he could go riding. I deff. prefer the 04-05 rather than the 06+.

Friends of mine have:
-06 elec start: Its a pain to start sometimes, but I think its b/c it isnt jetted right and you need to NEVER pump the throttle more than 2-3x it seems or it will flood out. Hell sometimes he cant give it throttle at all to start. BUT when his valves were first done he had very little issues if I recall.

-08 elec start: His is jetted and has an HRC kit. He doesnt seem to have any issues with his, always starts-but he jetted it himself.

I were to buy a 450r it would be electric and an 07+. 06 had most of the kinks worked out, but im convinced the 07 is somehow slightly better starting after seeing more than a few with no issues.

Gotta remember to, the 06+ had more jets to mess with-different carb and it has a leak jet many fail to even realize exists let alone adjust.

Yea donnie ockermans dad (builds donnie's motors) said that he has to adjust the valves on his and donnies 450r all the time. Seems to be kinda a flaw.

Donnie didnt act like he was near as happy with the honda compared to his old yamaha. He said it wont start for crap (as in start and pull the holeshot) and the valves always need adjusted. But then again donnie did pull 7 of 12 (i think it was 7 may have been 6) holeshots on his yamaha last year.

What year is donnie racing?

Another thing I dislike about the 04-05 is the crank bearing problems.

See here: http://www.trx450r.org/forum/93-engine/113138-crank-bearing-failures.html

Id trade hard starting for a blown crank/counterbalance.

Personally I still want to buy a 250 chassis or maybe a 450r chassis and put a CRF450r engine in it.

donnie runs an 06, but i am almost positive he said he runs a 05 carb because he didnt like the flat sided carb or whatever its called that they used in 06+ he also runs a kick start as backup but he runs rekluse so there isnt any stalling out or anything.

Jarrod mcclure is running an 06 kicker i believe and he has pulled a couple holeshots.

dxcody

Ooops i am incorrect. Donnie does not run a kick start as a backup, that was Jonathan Shaff (local Indiana Pro) that said he threw a kick start on just in case.

I wonder if adding a hotstart to an electric start machine would help?

You never know, could be something to look into.

I agree with your idea of putting a CRF450R motor on a 450r frame (a 250R frame would be stupid, they only weigh like 30 lbs, someone would die.) lol but it would be CRAZY fast.

At Parks Motorsports in monrovia, Indiana (where jonathan Shaff works) they have a blaster frame with a yf250f motor on it and Shaff said its just crazy.

250r is perfect tho, mostly cause its so well balanced and parts are still available.

id say use an EX frame, but good luck finding a-arms and swingers and such. Can be done but way less selection vs the 250r or 450r.

Now that I think about it, I have a buddy with an 06 e-start and he put a hot start on it, and it starts every time.

FYI, that thread I linked to on trx450r.org-several people even with 06's had issues with rod or crank bearing failures. Some got honda to give them a new engine or at least repair and some were up the creek with no paddle-honda refused help to them.

Not saying it will happen to ever 450r 04-06 but its possible. Real shame if it does. Me Id drop a crf engine into it if thats the case and honda wont help me out.

I forgot about my old thread I made, I just now searched and looked it up, its kind of a "450 vs. 400ex" review when I had a 450r back in february this year. lots of pics and side by side comparisons.
