I have been thinking about making my quad faster, but decided that instead of going to a bigger engine size, that I would turbo it. I plan on doing all the work and fabrication myself, but what size turbo do people use for this application, and where could I get it and what should I expect to pay for it?

Thanks for the info
Thomas

You will need a small turbo. expect to pay $250 and up for just the turbo. Do research on turbo kits for street bikes. It is the same basic principal. Let me know how it works, It is a great idea.

I was thinking $250 was about the low end price I would expect to pay. I have looked up alot of stuff online in the past few weeks and I cant get a for sure answer on what size turbo I could use. I talked to a turbo guy out of Arizona and he said I could use a T2 turbo but it might not work too well. The guy that makes the turbo kit for the 400 is using an IHI RHB3 turbo, but it is at least $500. I am thinking about trying the T2 turbo and if it doesnt work I would just put it on my sandrail. How high can you rev a stock 400 engine reliably?

Thanks
Thomas

How fast do you need it to rev? I know an after market cdi box takes it up to 10,300 rpm.

who in az did you talk to?

I was just wondering how high I could rev it up reliably without it blowing. If I end up using a little bigger turbo than I want then it won't spool up until the higher rpm's, but once it does spool up I imagine it being really fast and fun to ride.

I talked to Joe at Arizona Turbo.

Some guy in Costa Rica or somewhere like that makes turbo kits for the 400ex and the Raptor, it was in an issue of Dirtwheels about a year and a half ago. Power doubled on the 400ex with stock internals, 50+.

Talk to an expert turbo guy, but I would think on a 400ex you wouldn't want it build boost a TOO many rpms

I'll try to find my issue of Turbo magazine where they had a small story on that guy that turbocharged a 400ex. You will need more than a turbo. He had a pretty big turbo, i want to say a 16g. I would personall use an Aerodyne, since they are made for motorcycles. He also had a boost controller (you will need this), a blow off valve (you will need this), a turbo timer (dont need, but a good idea), an EGT, and lots of custom piping. I imagine tuning could be a nightmare. Carbs usually dont' like air forced through them, which is why you usually see turbos on fuel injected cars.
You might want to call Mr.Turbo (www.mrturbo.com). They specialize in turbocharging bikes, and I think they even have a Raptor kit which might work on your EX if adapted right. The kit's aren't cheap. The banshee kits, which are now discontinued due to too many problems ran $5000. The raptor kit is $3500. You will probably find it's cheaper and easier to get 50hp out of an EX naturally aspirated, but it would be cool and uniquie.

I think I have read that article. I have done a few turbo set-ups on some sandrails, so I dont think I would have a problem with all of the fabication and tuning of the bike. Also I know that I need a high pressure fuel pump, a regulator, a blow off valve, waste gate, and probably a tach. I have looked at the areodyne turbos on the web and they look cool. But I would imagine that they are really expensive. If they are a reasonable price I think I will use it. I have tried calling Mr.Turbo and all I get is a machine.

Thank for all the info

Seems to me it would be cheaper, and probably more reliable, to just have a bore\stroke like mine! The power is definately there and my way nobody even has to know!!!

ChadEXer How much money do you have invested into your engine? If I turbo my quad I can do it for about $200-$300 plus the cost of the turbo. Of course my time wont be added into it, but I still think it can be done for under a grand

I have about $3200 in my motor including all the work, the pipe, and the carb. It seems like it would hard to do a turbo correctly and spend less than a grand!!

That sounds like a really sweet idea. I saw a kit for the raptor on one of the sites when i was lookin for a 416 kit, it cost 2000 bucks. Let us know how it turns out, i'd really like to know.

Good luck with it.

DUNEZRUNNER I think you could build a turbo kit for your 400ex for under a grand as long as you don't put on an intercooler. That peice is gonna cost you quite a bit...and even more if you have to have it custom made. I figure that the turno kit for my gsxr 600 will be about a grand and it will be non-intercooled, since it will only run about 6-10 psi.
