did everything i could think of and it still wont start or idle from cranking it over only role start is the only way... it cuts out from 1/8 to half throttle but after that it runs good..replaced items: rings, pilotjet, mainjet 150, pilot 42, cleaned carb good, new cam chain, air mix screw 2 turns out from seat and adjusted the valves

it will still start even if its lean. Im thinking there is more of a jetting issue then just your a/f screw. Whats your full setup?

Get CJM or tri5ron or someone who is good at naming things off the top of thier head (things thats happened to them from experience) and you will get a few troubleshooting methods that will lead to your answer more than likely.

boneless, how do you have like 1000 posts already and you joined after me.

What exactly happens when you try and crank it?
-Does it want to start but wont fully kick over or does it just keep cranking and cranking and not getting
anywhere
-What happens if you give it throttle while starting? 3 pumps of throttle before starting?
-Is the choke fully on? If you have a 42 pilot. Most you should use is half choke. .
-When you push start it, does it run good?
-How good is it cranking, like it should or is it slow? Have you hooked jumper cables to it and tried? Tried to charge the battery up?
-Are we sure its getting proper spark and fuel?
-Did you ever have it apart, is the stock decompression mechanism still in the head if you have a stock cam?

10 bux says your valves could be outta whack. Did you adjust them when you could grab the rockers and they moved around-that means your at top dead center-no movement means your not at TDC and wont adjust them right. Specs are: Intake: .04, Exhaust .05 inches.

Ex: Buddy of mines 450r valves were outta whack. Dang thing would not start unless pushed or cranked over like 200x, it also ran poorly.

Just what I can think of off the top of my head.

it still ticks! which ticks me off i adjusted my valvescould itbe that i need a new cam chain tensioner since i replaced the old timing chain? would the tensioner cause a ticking noise if the spring was bad

Most 400s tick when they are brand new. Its just what they do. I wouldn't worry about it if your valves were in spec. Unless it's louder or didn't do it before you tore it down.

They all tick, some worse than others. If you have a hotcam its truly noticable.

If you want check your tensioner. It should spring back no issues.

probley just a tentioner its usally a good thing to replace the tentioner with the chain. just test it and see!

well... my 400 sounds like it has a hot cam lol but its stock  so idk wtf is making it tick

Replacing your tensioner could help the tick. You won't be able to make it fully disappear though. Also make sure your decompressor is working properly.

its pretty loud lol are the chances of a new tensioner quieting the tick high?

It could be, but you probably would have noticed that the chain was looser than it should be when you put the valve cover on. My thought about the decompressor is that since you have a stock cam it will still have the decompressor mechanism, and if it isn't disengaging as it should, it would be opening your exhaust valve when it shouldn't, causing a tick. I'm not an expert like some other guys on here, but i think its at least a possible cause for the extra tick
