ok guys so the 450 im thinking about trading needs a radiator and the oil drain plug leaks (probley striped) what im wondering is there anything common to look for on these like on the ex timing chain issues. how hard is a rad to replace?

Radiator is super easy to replace, but they also cost alot. It also depends on which drain bolt is leaking, if it is the transmision bolt leaking, it could use a washer, or if it is stripped, you would have to split the cases to retap it so the shaving dont go up into the motor.

As for what to look for, I look for worn out ball joints and tie rod ends, push the top of the tire in and out and see if there is any play. Check the oil, if its new, at least the dude thought of changing it, but also check the chain and sprockets. Just check all over for worn out bearings. Listen to the motor... etc. One thing to check to see how long/tough its been ridden is to look at the frame and clutch cover where boots rub and if there isnt much wear, then it hasnt been ridden very much.

he said it leaked around the oil bolt so im guessing it needs retaped or helicoled i defnitly will not but it if thats the case. also how much would a rad run?

you can get a stock take off for under $100 (http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=2005+trx+450r+radiator&_sacat=See-All-Categories)

As far as the oil drain bolt, tap it up a size and call it a day. Just make sure you drill from the bottom and use lots of grease on the bit so you can catch the oil shavings. Then flush it a few times with some cheap oil. Once your done, go rip on it.

Yah i'd just flush the oil a bunch of times after you tap it. Not such a pain in the ***** compared to splitting the cases..

Any pics of this beast?

I would make that trade in a second. You're both taking a chance on it IMO. He probably assumes that the 400ex is bullet proof, but all of the issues you've been having, he might be in for a surprise, just as much as you could be.

I'd still do it man. You need to service them properly though. If you're unsure about anything, take it to somebody. I have NO problem paying my engine builder to do his thing. Everything else on the bike is simple enough, but I dont want to risk blowing the engine up due to some noob mistake.

Id pull the filter on it just incase to check for shavings, more than likely if its made it this long it prolly dont have a crank issue but never hurts to check. Depending on how its been rode i would check the stress points of the frame. Other than that if its runs then there cant be much wrong with them. I always tear my 450's down after a riding season and freshen them up with new rings and and timing chain. If its a little tricky to start it could just need the valves adjusted. Which requires a shim kit on the 450's. No more simple valve adjustments like the 400EX lol. Wanna make sure your decompressor is set right also, that can play a part in the starting. Other than that these motors are very simple. I think i could take one apart in my sleep anymore. And if your trading stock suspension 400EX for it than you cant go wrong.
