I went to check my oil today on my 440 and thought it had a gas smell to it. Is there any reasoning behind it. All help is appreciated I'm still learning these 400s

pretty sure that's a sign the rings are starting to go. The rings aren't sealing anymore so it's allowing the air/gas mixture to leak down underneath the piston into the oil. Should be causing blow-by too I would think.

Will it hurt to ride it? And is there any other way to tell if the rings are going out. It doesn't smoke or anything.

you could have just flodded it out to just change the oil and smell it next check if it still smells id say you rings are going bad

Bad rings, gas is going past the rings and into the oil and your not burning all the gas.

Pray your 440 bore isnt worn out, only thing you can do if it cant take rings (it needs to be measured by someone who knows what they are doing) is a new sleeve.

Check the compression, you should have at least 100-120psi-if not time for a rebuild.

Oil being forced into the intake tube. There is a clear box attached to the intake tube, if it has oil in it you got blow-by.

Like said above, change the oil, put a few hours on it, and see if anything has changed.

If it does not, it's time for a rebuild and yea it will hurt to keep riding it. That's the boat im in now.

I checked the blow box. It didn't have any oil. Is that a good sign for the rings to still be good?

yes, but it also doesn't mean that the rings aren't still bad

Do a compression check. That will tell you the story about your ring wear. If its like CJM said you will be good to go.

CJM-I have a new jug so that a plus if I need more than rings.

And does anyone know if you can get a compression tester rented from somewhere or will I have to take it somewhere. And where do I do the compression test.

Think autozone might have them. You take out the spark plug after warming up the engine to operating temp, screw in the compression tester hose and then crank the engine over with the throttle open and the gas OFF for 5-7 secs till you achieve the same reading overall after 3-5x.

I got my comp tester from harbor freight btw.

And could him running truck oil that he got from oreilys in it instead of atv oil affect the rings sealing properly.

Possible. You specifically need an oil that will work for a wet cutch system. The back of the bottle needs to not say anything about "energy conserving".

Many use shell rotella 15w-40, its a diesel oil and works well in the type of engines we have.

Do the compression test on it.. If it is not smoking, then the rings could be just fine.. For some of us these bikes are still no/hard starting sob's. Every time that engine cycles over, it does not start it will get gas in the oil..
