try to finess(sp) it with a hammer( put nut back on before hitting bolt) If that doesn't work have someone turn the bolt while hitting it. Thats how I got mine out. If all else fails cut it out with a sawz-all.

GET A BIG PUNCH AND A HAMMER.
I knocked mine out with a peice of 1/4" metal tube and a big hammer. Went in the same way with alot of grease.

i would do what tjd says, have someone turn it while someone else hammers it. it should come eventually. next time you should probably take it out to re-grease it every 2 months or so.

If people would learn from other peoples mistakes(like mine). Everyone would know that it needs to come out every once in a while to be lubed.

A sawzall worked for me ;)
I would definatley cut it with a sawzall if i were you, I cracked my old frame trying to beat out a little $35 bolt.
its not worth it to abused the crap outa your frame just for a bolt...

when the pivot bold freezes up dpes that mean the swing arm does not move???
how do i know know if mines is f'ed up????
No it just means that it won't come out. It has bearings that it rides in so it can still move, just not come out.

i just did mine in jan. and boy did it need it i have a 99 and don't think its seen grease since it was built,i've only had it for about a year.took about 3hrs worth of work and alot of fbombs. i had to make a tool out of some rod and heat it to get it to come out, just becareful how much heat you use.doesn't honda know what zerk fittings are for? any way you may want to look into getting a stainless pivot bolt i hear they are good,i just got another stock one while i had it out i also changed the swing arm bearings w/pivot works kit all the parts you need for about $50, way cheaper than honda. i also used some synthetic waterproof grease i had from my seadoo, and gave it a very good helping of grease, i also plan to follow the recommended maintanence schedule on this part.good luck

I am just wondering how you use a saws all to cut it out of the bit of the engine it goes though...? If I am correct.... I will know for sure when I do mine...

Well, Im not sure how 400ex swingarms attach to the piviot bolt (shape of the swingarms attachment part), but on my old 86 R set-up, I just cut the bolt in between the mounting bracket thats on the piviot bolt (thats attaches to the cases and frame) and the swingarms mounting point.
That may be hard to understand what I said though :(
You could just cut through the (2) bushings on the sides of the needle bearings, and that should do fine, but youd have to buy new bushings and a new bolt.

Is there any other parts that have to come off or be loosened before i attempt to take the pivot bolt out? Also would it be easier with the quad off the ground on jack stands or is it more stable on the ground. I am gonna attempt to get my pivot bolt out this weekend after reading all these post, but i am not sure whay else should be done before i attempt to take the bolt out. Thanks for the help.

Put the quad up on stands. Take off the rear shock mount that connects to the swingarm. Take off the nut on the pivot bolt and push out pivot bolt. Is a little easier with 2 people.
Reverse procedure to install. Its as simple as that if the bolt comes out easy. I did mine after the 1 st year of ridding and I play in the mud a lot and mine was not to hard to get out. Took about 30 minutes.

i took my quad apart a week ago and had the same problem. i worked on it for 3 days and finally after i tried heating it, took a sledge hammer to it, and tried cutting it, it finally came out. when i got it out my bearings were dust, the bolt and nut were ruined and i had to buy all new bearings and the bolt and nut.

Some folks just don't learn do they Rico? I have owned my '99 for two years now and have had the bolt out four times to lube it, and the bearings. It comes out easier every time, I like the Idea of a stainless bolt though. Where can I get one?

Put the bike up on its side and remove the nut, then buy some PB blaster and put that to it then turn the bolt, and pound it at the same time. It will come right out.
