LSR TRX LT500R Hybrid
Well I finally decided to start a thread of this build. My goal was to fit an LT500r engine into a trx geometry frame. I know many of you are Honda engine guys however I think some of you may enjoy this trx/Suzuki build.
I have been collecting parts for this build for about 2 years. I have tried many combinations of trx frames with this motor. For example: I have a JRD frame however I have no a arms, this frame would have been a good candidate for the conversion. Called JRD for some a arms, however JRD would not even return my calls, I guess they did not want my money. I have a Leagers narrow frame flip top conversion for a YZ426 motor, but would have had to notch out the main cross member for the LT motor. Even though the frame was already converted from a trx to a YZ by Laeger, I still did not have the heart to cut the frame. I tried a Lonestar trx frame for the conversion and got pretty far with that attempt. Since someone already had chopped it up for a YZ conversion I did not mind chopping it further. Had to modify the main rear cross member and drop the center of the motor into the bottom frame rails. Frame also modified for a DR Q 500r pipe. Turned out OK but wanted to build something a little cleaner.

So here we go…Lonestar CRF Frame (trx geometry) with Dr. Q HRD LT540R engine.

Had ridden the 500r for about 10 years but then switched to the trx 310r. Loved both bikes but wanted the best of both.
Let me know your thoughts on the conversion. I will certainly abandon the thread if you think it uninteresting.
Pics to come shortly….
Quad is mocked up, no where near done.

Chain is aligned. Spacer turned down. This took a bit of time to get everything correct.

Is that pipe for the LT or a conversion? Do you have to make a lefty silencer? and add lugs to the frame? I wanna watch this. Keep taking pictures.

I had one of these for a couple years, in a stock trx frame. Was a blast to ride- the only problem is the Lt motor was a bit finicky with jetting. Make sure to use a big enough pilot jet! This hybrid was popular in the early 90's. Shane Hitt and Daryl Rath had them. Looks nice- you will enjoy it!

Made up some front mounts. Just need to turn some spacers. Fits nice between frame rails, no issues there.

Switched frames from original post, both are CRF frames. Blue frame had minor differences in the front mounts as well as the bottom supports off of the rear main cross member. This frame will allow for less grinding and fab work on the bottom engine mount.

Mocked up the rear swingarm....... Rad skid plate, Sidewinder sprocket, X-33 axle. Using Custom Axis front and rear shocks.

a friend of mine tried this many years ago he couldnt get the carb around the rear shock to a filter. he ended up being the first to put a ktm 520 motor in a 250r after not making the lt500 motor work. curious to see how u do it.

in regard to the airboot:
yes it is not going to be easy, it can be done.
I had built a version before this and had to make the intake tube out of fiberglass. The tube was a bit heavy for my liking. This time i will probably go with some flat pieces of aluminum mated with some aluminum tube.

I may go with a custom intake manifold that breaks the carb off to the left of the engine. In this case there may be room for both the exhaust and the tube. We will see....not quit there yet...working on the bottom motor mount now.

If fiber glass was too heavy for you, why dont you use a wet lay up method with carbon fiber? You can lay it just like fiberglass you can even use fiberglass resin, although it isnt really recommend only fall back is that it may yellow slightly and is a little more brittle than the epoxy resin more commonly used with cf and kevlar. I would say with some 3k cf you could get away with three layers, that should make for a nice light intake just have to make aluminum or steel rings to wrap the ends so that you could clamp down on the cf.

thanks for the suggestion audioworks, i will consider the cf, would look great as well.

only looks good if you take the time to make it look good....hand lay'd doesnt really look good unless you do alot of sanding and polishing, but can look good

Your swingarm, is it a 86/87 or 88/89 style?

86-87 style, have a look at the first or second pic.

thanks for pointing that out. i was only looking at the last few recent pics. it looked like the 86/87 arm just wanted to make sure. i know your frame is a LS CRF so i cant really compair your build to a stock frame build. which is what mine will be built off of. great work so far. always looking to updates.

im running into the same problem with the airboot but i have a 91 stock frame lt250r so i was going to use the lt500r reed boot cause it angles out to the right and run the filter straight off the carb or get a section of large radiatior hose. but i have a guy that is going to build me an angled reed boot out of aluminum.

Had to move this thing into the shed. Waiting on some weld tabs for the bottom and front bottom mounts. I have the two cross tubes for the bottom mounts cut and fitted, just waiting on the tabs before I start welding incase i have to do some minor tweaks.

switched to a houser front end insead of the walsh arms from the previous pics. I have to figure these walsh arms out before i use them, for now the housers fit great and the shock length of these axis shocks is corect as well.

Whats the problem your having with the walsh arms?

hontrx265r
12-06-2011, 05:15 PM
I don't think he's having a problem, probably more of a surprise. He like myself expected a lt walsh arm on a stock style frame to use a 19" shock like almost every lt arm out there. However they require a shorter 18.5. So hes getting too much droop with 19? just a guess but I bet I'm close.. I have to check but I think I have the axis bodies you need to make those correct.

trx/lt500r
12-06-2011, 06:48 PM
hontrx265r is correct. These axis shocks are around 19.25 inches. They put the walsh arms way to low. I will keep the housers for now but love those walsh arms. Will keep my eye out for a good set of 18.5 length shocks shorly.

89trx250r
12-06-2011, 09:37 PM
Lol darnit I was gonna guess that! I figured they were arms for a walsh frame which has the adjustable shock towers.

No those weren't for a Walsh frame they are the long body, that's just the way they are.

Some pics of the first draft of the lt/trx. Frame is a no link 250r frame that was converted for a yz engine. Took a pile of work to get the 500r engine down into the frame. Rear cross member and front mounts were not as clean i would have liked.

That is a Dr Q pipe. I did get that pipe to fit. I did need to tilt the radiator to fit.
Could not run stock 250r shrouds, also would have had to cut the front plastics.
Some day i may come back to this build.

Ok, back to the crf frame. Back to the Walsh a arms. Got the spacers worked out for these walsh arms. Mocking up the pipe now. It will all fit. No tire rub. Radiator will fit. Plastics will fit as well.
