Did we go over the ring sizes last time? What did you come up with when measuring?

Also what oil you using?

Also wonder if the exhaust packing is shot after you had oil coming out the exhaust port like nuts?

IDK man.

yup ring sizes are off alittle (i know) piston to wall clearence is good repacked the pipe 5 times since rebuild or what ever.do you think it should need to be bored to a 402 if so what will it cost to get bored and honed i can get wiseco piston kits for like 119.00 bucks also the piston is very gold any problem there?

Gold, sounds to me like its burning oil of course.

It probably needs to be bored out dude, thats why the ring sizes were off. I just went thru it, ordered new rings only to find out it needs next bore size up.

Any machine shop can do it and some dealers do it, all you need is the piston. Usually runs about 60+ bucks.

402, 407, 416, 426 and 440.

ok so 5 over is 402 because the motor is 397 thuse 85.5 mm piston from wiseco lol right and are the gaskets that come with the piston kits any good? or trash?

Never used wiseco gaskets so I cant comment. Only used OEM or cometic.

Sorry your having so much trouble, but thats generally what these machines are-money pits lol.

I were you Id upgrade to an 11:1 402.

You might need to try new valves or either you valve seat have a lot of gunk and build up on it, and it is not making a good seat that was what was wrong with mine a while back.

You might need to try the 402 like stated and then go from there. Tell me this, when you put oil in it do you fill it up to the very tip top of the oil resevoir cause on 400ex's if you fill the oil resevoir up to much it will over oil the motor, and will make the rings go out real fast.

after you put oil in it crank it up and let run for a little while then cut it off and check the oil dipstick and make SURE it is halfway up the dipstick nothing more and nothing less.

ya oil is right on spot fill 1.5 then run a min top off to like 1.75 quarts also i relaped the valve real good and the seats looked great and it started smoking all at once (well on start up bad sometimes) whitch is why i think it needs bored because i ran it hard the day befor it started smoking lol hard hard!!

I think i posted the first time it started smoking when you re-did your rings. I suggested you probably need to bore up one size and you refused to accept my advice. sure it was the more expensive fix, and it's hard to swallow sometimes, but that's better than spending twice as much because of the trouble you've had to go through.:blah:

i thought that was the purpose of the past 3 threads. getting a new oversize piston and boring it was my impression of what you were going to do the last time you put it back together.

didnt you buy a piston and have it bored out last week?
